OK, there are probably many people who would not consider speakers from Pioneer but these look pretty cool:
http://
http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/product_detail.jsp?product_id=11449&taxonomy_id=42-93

The design states:

Quote
S-V2EX-QL
 3-way vented box system

Combining cutting-edge speaker technology and high-quality design

All speaker units are designed by TAD (Technical Audio Devices)

 Exceptional TAD Beryllium tweeter

Designed to eliminate the influence of internal standing waves

Perfect time alignment of the sound

Has anyone heard these?

Actually those look badass.  That coax driver, while not quite the driver in the TAD model 1/2, it is pretty close (mag cone, berl tweet vs. berl cone & tweet).  I heard a few comments from some who listened to them and the TADs at CES.  Lots of people thought they had a lot of promise, but circumstances weren't the best for evaluation.

The fact that North Americans don't take speakers from the large Japanese companies is unfortunate I think.  They obviously have the resources to design and build anything they desire.

There have been some amazing products from Pioneer/Sony/Denon etc that never made to these shores.  The funny part is that we have no problem filling our homes with their electronics.

Hey Josh,

Thanks for the info.  I have been following your DIY projects and I'm very impressed by how well you are picking up all of the technology.  That power conditioner is on my list.   Too bad you live so far from Chicago!  Also, I have your potentiameter and was not able to use it.  Please PM me your address and I'll send it back (sorry).

Another thing I've seen a lot of lately is waveguides.  Check these out:

Couldn't agree more.  Perhaps some day we'll be able to hear many of these designs that we only see on the web.  Of course...how many current audiophiles would give Sony or Pioneer (TAD) a second look.  Very few I would guess.  They'd rather see Bose, B&W or the same :(

Of course...as much as I do like some TAD drivers...I still have my reservations about these little 85db speakers. Of course I would have my reservations about most 85db speakers ;)

Thanks heavystarch for posting the pic of the full size version of these Pioneer speakers (original link had the bookshelf versions). I am very interested and will try to track down whether anyone is carrying these in North America.

Me too.  I'm not a fan of front ported speakers but those coax or mid-tweeter drivers are cool.  I believe Thiel also uses a similar driver.  The Pioneer cabinets look pretty cool in the pix.

Here are some Sony speakers that never took off in North America...

I have a 6.1 system that uses six of these, awesome I love them...

No one believes they are Sony's when they hear them.

I like that they use a serious roundover, not a foo-foo roundover, or lack-there-of, that most others use.  Goes to minimize diffraction which helps with imaging, etc.

Cool looking Pioneer speakers.  I think some mfrs have come a long way, at least with their higher-end stuff.

The Sony's look nice too - in a B&W / Wharfdale kind of way.

Dan, did you really lump B&W in with Bose?!?!  C'mon!   I love my B&W's - both pairs.  Or did I misunderstand?  Though, you're right - I'd be hard pressed to give Sony or Pioneer a serious consideration over the likes of B&W, VMPS, or nearly any company that specializes in speakers.

If the Pioneer were designed by TAD, they will be high end.

Sony built the SS M9ES and SS M9ED speakers which both were reference products, even though they carried the Sony badge.

Ultimate AV's Tom Norton (who used to edit Stereophile) posted a blog entry about the Pioneer speakers at CES. Here's the link:
