They get great reviews and the idea of a speaker that presents an easy load to the amp makes sense to me, even if not using low power tubes.

Pretty reasonably priced too, especially used.

If possible, find a dealer and audition them at the store. When I auditioned them a couple years back, they were laid back and pleasant, but lacked air, extension, and slam.  I listened to them with Cary gear, which is what they used to voice them, so I was told.

I listened to them with Audio Research gear and almost went with them, but once I heard my Revel M20s....

They're sweet, but sounded better with tube gear than with SS.  You really should give them an audition; they're very nice indeed.

Hey Dogberry,
did you listen to the Soliloquy's at GNP.  That's where I heard them, and they used AR gear when I was there, if I remember right.  Thought they were OK, but not the best monitor I heard.  I looked for my old notes, but I think I deleted them, but from what I remember, soundstage was OK, but not as good as some others, and not as detailed as some other monitors I have heard.
Did you get your Revel's from Ambrosia?  That's where I heard them, but they really did not do it for me, not sure why, but they did not give me the goosebump factor.
BTW, where in LA are you?  I'm in the westside, Brentwood.

Yep, GNP and Ambrosia.  I'm in Glendale.

I love the M20s!

i also auditioned the Revel M20s...and i agree w/ you, Randy...the M20s didn't do a thing for me either...kinda boxy sounding IMHO which surprised me based on the price and the positive reviews i had read on them...Brentwood, heh? i used to live in W. LA a few miles south of the university... :)

Yes..the M20's disappointed me as well..especially considering the price. I can't imagine ever wanting a Revel speaker until at least the Gem..and even then..I wouldn't want to buy them at those prices. I would accept them as a gift though..any takers?

I think the M20's with ARC tube amplification may not be a good match, especially if the Audio Research was a low powered model. I thought they sounded good with Mark Levinson amps (for obvious reasons), but the F50 was way better, but also costs over $7k. It had one of the best built cabinets I bruised my knuckles on.

I liked the M-20's.  They did everything right, BUT they did nothing for me emotionally.  I did not feel that they conveyed the emotion of the music at all.  I have only heard a couple of neutral speakers that actually get this right.

BTW, Soliloquy is not bad, but they can be bettered for less.  and if you buy them, don't pay retail.  They are the only speaker manufacturer I know of that gives dealers 50 points on every model.

Hi Jerry,
I think we all heard the soliloquys with the AR gear, because we all heard them at the same place (GNP in Pasadena), and I guess that's how GNP likes to drive them.
I don't remember what Ambrosia was driving the M20's with.

Hantra,
I thought the same thing, as I said, no goosebump factor, but I could not find anything wrong with them when I listened to them.

I own Soliloquy 5.3's. I like the smooth sound that they deliver-they're easy to listen to. Pretty respectable bass response too. I mean for a pair of 5.25" drivers they have obviously had a lot of r&d.Mid range is a strong point IMO and the highs are nice and clean perhaps lacking slightly in the extreme top end. Female vocals are excellent and overall a decent speaker for the price. I bought mine as dealer demos @ 1/3 off retail. Oh yea, top notch construction and finish too.
