Placement of Phono stage
« on: 15 Jan 2006, 05:32 am »
Hello everyone,

Is it allright to place a phono stage near my cd player or other equipment (they are side by side, nearly touching due to limited rack space).

According to Robert Harley (the hi fi author), the transformer hum from the amp and I assume cdp will interfere with the phono stage (Clearaudio Basic). In the book his exact words were to turn  off digital equipment when playing LPs, in this case will putting my cdp in stand by mode be sufficient or must I turn it off completely. I usually leave it in standby mode 24/7.

Thx.

I would not worry about it unless you are picking up a hum.  I have had my phono next to the preamp with no problems.  I did try using unsheilded phono cables once and started picking up radio stations.

I think you will just have to try it out.  Each setup is different.  I get a nasty hum if my tt is anywhere near another component, especially when it is above my cdp.  But then there are tubes in the player so maybe that is part of the problem.
