placing speaker on maple wood?
« on: 13 Jan 2006, 02:59 am »
Hi,
I'm curious if anyone places speaker (tower speaker) on a piece of maple wood ? I read through forums and see that people put amp or CD player on maple wood to improve the sound. But How about putting speaker on top of maple wood? Does it improve the sound too?

I'm thinking of puting my speaker on a piece of wood since the speaker is not heavy and it's not stable on the carpet (totem forrest uses Claw, not spike)

thanks.

I've tried putting speakers on maple platforms (no spikes, just the speakers flat on the maple) and found it to smear the midrange and soften the sound overall...

the reason i'm asking is there is something weird i have experienced about the bass. Please bear with with me if this is something i don't know...:)

My room size is 12x14 and speaker is 2 ft from back wall and 2 ft from side wall. I sit 9 ft way from speaker.  My room has bass trap  (all 4 corners).

THe soundstage is great, but the bass is not loud enough even though it's tight. When i stand up and move close to either side wall , the bass is stronger (like i  can feel bass is coming from the subwoofer).

Then, I move the speakers very close to the wall, but it's still the same at my listening position. Therefore, i don't know if this is normal or not.

Thank you for reading this.  And i hope someone can give me suggestions or opions on this.

It sounds like a room acoustics issue...perhaps you're getting nulls at specific bass frequencies based on your room dimensions.  Using platforms under your speakers isn't going to solve that.

You can try a couple of things with placement...try off-setting your speakers 2-3 inches from each other (ie. if one speaker is 2ft off the back wall, put the other 2ft+3inches off the back wall), and maybe try varying the space between the bass traps and the corners a little.  Beyond that, its probably a good idea to get advice from an acoustics professional like Ethan Winer as to what treatments might be most effective in solving your problem...
