Hi
I'd like to know if the XR55 got a fan or any noise when playing?
Thanks a lot.

It doesn't have a fan as fas as I know. If it does, you can't hear it.

The SAXR-25 and the 45 are from the same generation. Neither have HDMI. The 45 has the best power supply put in one of these digital receivers. Both of this generation used fans for cooling.

The 50 and 70 are just about the same internally. They use the same basic power supply as used in the 25. The big difference is the HDMI board and power supply for it in the 70. If you do not use a Panasonic DVD-A player, there is not that much benefit to the 70. This generation does not use fans and can run fairly h ...

Wayne, any updates on your thoughts on the XR55?  Is the powersupply in there as robust as the one in the XR45?

I haven't opened the SA-XR55 up yet.

It is playing in a bedroom system with the incredible Onix X-LS and X-SUB.

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC speakers for $400.00 including the sub!!!

Source is modded SB2.

This little system sounds so good, I am hesitant to take it down to look inside the Panny

I do have a modded SA-XR45 here I need to check out. I will most likely pull the 55 out and put the 45 in to see how they compare. Then I may just open the 55 up. I don't think the 55 or any newer generation Panny receiver will ever have a PS like the 45 again. The trend is smaller and lighter switching PS.

Even though the PS may not be the same as the 45's, the 55 sounds great.

When Wayne says it sounds good enough -not- to open up, that means something. :)

I am currently running an unmodded XR45, but with a upgraded power cord and isolation transformer on power end.

I like the idea of the XR55 dual amp feature and the ability to cross over at 80hz (instead of the 100hz I am using now).

I have a passive sub woofer with a standard amp that does not have cross over or phase control.  So I am dependent on the panny for crossing over my sub.

I primarly use the SPDIF input on the panny and run both 2 channel music and 6.1 HT.

Is the XR55 an upgrade for me?  Or downgrade considering the potentially better powersupply in my current XR45.

The only way to know for sure is to try both in your system. You can probably sell the SA-XR45 for a decent amount. I believe that are quite a few folks still looking ofr one.

The 55 is the receiver Panny should have come out with 3 years ago.

Wayne:

Do you like the X-sub?  Mine seems to rumble a bit with the XR-55.  It's crossed over at 80 hz, and I also have the crossover pot on the sub set to 80.  Is this how you're using it?  Are you using subsonic filtering?

Waynegro,

Sorry I didn't see your post earlier.

Try switching phase on the X-sub. In the room I am using mine in it was a bit boomy, at first. I switched the phase on the sub amp and it tightened up quite a bit. I am running the sub out from the Panny. When you plug into the single LFE input on the X-SUB it defeats the crossover frequency control on the X-SUB.

I am crossing the X-LS and X-SUB at 80 hz in the Panny.

I am using only digital inputs so no subsonic filter is needed.

If you continue to have "rumble" the sub may be exciting some room modes. A digital EQ may help with this. Lots of room treatment is also a good thing.

According to Panasonic at CES, a new model will be coming out between April and June of this year.  Model # was SA-XR57, but they didn't have any details.

The SA-XR57 is described on the Panasonic site, but it is not available yet:

Jason, no one said the 70 was missing HQ mode.  It's the 55 which does not have the HQ mode, and the question was how big of a deal is it to be missing?  It seems the 55 is none the worse for not having the HQ mode.
