Forget the transport.  Get a USB offramp from Empherical Audio for $975, get a free download of Foobar 2000, and use your home computer or better yet, your notebook computer and add hard drives as needed.  This set up will out perform the $5,000 to $10,000 or any tranansport made for that matter!!!

I would not have believed it until Steve loaned me a USB upramp for me to do a direct compairison with my Wadia.  It wasn't even close.

I have not got a clue as to what you are trying to tell me. I've got a decent audio system that I'm always trying to upgrade and I've got a cheap computer that I can use to "talk?" to you. What has a computer got to do with my audio system. Pardon me if I seem to be a dunce but there are a lot of things I just don't understand.

Charles, take a look at the "Square Circle" on this forum.  It will teach you a lot.  You will be astounded.  Server baised systems will eventually replase CD and DVD usage.  I only use my CD's, about 1800 of them, as a last resort back up.  They are never touched.  Good luck! Feel free to PM any specific questions if you get started with this.  It is worth the learning curve.

Unless you insist on going the esoteric route, look into the Sony XA-7ES cdp. Hard to find a better and more reliable transport mechanism. The internal dac is quite good also.

If you want to try belt drive I think you can get a CEC new for that amount of money.

Charlie,
What dac will you be using with this "transport" ? Or did you mean to say a cd player only ? :) [/list:u]

I'm a big fan of Dusty at CIA and it looks like he has another winner in his VDA-2 DAC. I'm thinking about giving it a listen. Gotta have a decent CD transport though. I've tried other DACs hooked up to a good CD player and the results have been disappointing.

I've gotten some CES Show info reports Charlie....a few said that Dusty's DAC sounded good....sounds like a fine choice.
Transport...I've heard the Stello (george's post)...three times now...sounded good (had it with my DAC on one occasion). I use an EA modded Sony 7700...as do a few other's in the NYAR...its old, but it works very well.[/list:u]
      Good luck !! :) [/list:u]

Hello Charlie,

Since Northstar transport was mentioned I will chime in.

Using PC as a music server and transport is the latest thing in digital mainly because it offers convenience of a mega jukebox with audiophile quality sound -- a big bang for the buck.  The biggest drawback for a lay person who is not really savvy with computer is learning how to rip/compress/catalog music and how to set up the necessary hardware.  Notebook on your rack doesn't look all that great either.  Wireless devices such as Sqeezebox also mean you have to learn how to set up wireless network.  Some of you who live and breath IT stuff laugh but for an average end-user, all these computer stuff can be daunting.

Suppose you are willing to do all this for a PC based digital frontend, how does it compare with dedicated CD transports in terms of sound if we discount the other factors like mega jukebox feature and relatively low cost?  The absolute sound quality, personal though it may be, does matter since some will spend the last 18k to get that infinitesimal improvement (to his ears) over a 2k unit.  In my limited experience, Bolder modified wireless SB2 used strictly as transport to feed my Northstar 192 DAC via coaxial SPDIF connection doesn't sound as good as same CD being fed through my matching Northstar 192 transport.  But there is a caveat here.  I like the sound that I get from my transport/DAC when they are connected in I2S transfer protocol.  This mode allows direct upsampling to DAC bypassing the receiver on the DAC.  When I use a SPDIF connection between the Northstar transport and the DAC, the advantage is gone.  The Northstar unit, which uses a top loading Philips CD-PRO2 mechanism sounds about the same as SB2 digital out when both are connected via SPDIF.  If CIA VDA2 only has SPDIF or TossLink, SB2 may not be a bad option if you are willing to spend the time to learn to set it up and if you are amenable to deploying a computer for music.  As for Northstar 192 transport, it is a solid unit if you only use SPDIF but an exceptional one when mated with Northstar 192 DAC enabling the I2S mode.

Besides the regular cds. I like to watch and listen to live in concert dvds. I know this can been done through a hard drive type setup.Unfortunely this is more trouble than I'm willing to bother with at the moment. I for one will continue to enjoy the old fashion transport and Dac. I'm still waiting to hear music through a hard drive system that doesn't sound like its been bleached through it. I'm sure a Dac would help this and maybe a tubed preamp. Since there wasn't either used in the setups I've heard. Maybe it will help me to change over eventually....It won't be any time soon however.

All this talk of cd/dvd players being obsolete is nonsense...Maybe in 15 years or more.
