Channel Islands VDA-2 Is A Hit!

Hi,

Just had a listen to the CI VDA-2 DAC at THE show in Vegas and came away very impressed. The sound it produced was a lot like analog. No digititis or over emphasized highs. A very natural sound with good space and decay. Tone was very nice as well.

Besides listening to the DAC Dusty took some time to explain the VDA-2 design process to me. He's put a lot of work into this design and it sounds like it. A well thought out board layout, minimalist output stage with a clever I/V implementation, and the PCM1794 built in digital filter operating in slow rolloff mode combine for a sweet sound.

It's not hyper-detailed; although I didn't notice any lack of resolution either. The highs are not in your face which is something I really liked as my ears are sensitive to many digital sources which tend to exaggerate treble in my opinion. Cymbals sounded just right to me.

Instrument tone was a strength.

Can't say much about bass because I don't feel the room was large enough to let the speakers breathe. What I heard was tight and well defined. Don't want to give the wrong impression, there was nothing awry with the lows at all but I would like to hear the VDA-2 in a bigger room with speakers I'm more familiar with to get a better idea about bass response.

The system was a VDA-2 feeding CI's passive preamp to CI's amps. I don't remember the model number exactly but think they were the 100. Speakers were two way floorstanders.

Don't post here much, but there has been interest in the new CI DAC, myself included, so figured I'd pass along impressions of what I heard.

Hope everyone is enjoying the new year  :D

Hi,

Sorry, I don't remember what the transport was... Just got back from a Vegas to L.A. whirlwind trip to see some old friends. Been awake for 24 hours and my head is tired.

Dusty Vawter's CES post back on December 21 said he would be playing this system in one room:

Quote
2nd room-CIAudio VPC•2/VDA•2/D•100's
ModWright/Sony CD player (as transport)
Pen Audio Alba Loudspeakers
Headphone System CIAudio VHP•1/VAC•1/Senn 650's

If that's what TV Man heard, then a ModWright/Sony CD player was the transport.

Here's the full lineup of stuff Dusty planned to have in Room 2051 (again from his 12/21 post on CES):

Quote
Room 2051 with ModWright/Pen Audio
1st room-ModWright/Denon 3910 tube mod CD player & SWL 9.0 Preamp
CIAudio D•200's
Pen Audio Serenade Loudspeakers

2nd room-CIAudio VPC•2/VDA•2/D•100's
ModWright/Sony CD player (as transport)
Pen Audio Alba Loudspeakers
Headphone System CIAudio VHP•1/VAC•1/Senn 650's

So it sounds like the transport was a ModWright/Sony CD player.

Yep, the player feeding the VDA-2 was a stock Sony DVP-NS9100ES

Actually, the unit we ended up using was NOT in fact stock.  It did have some power supply upgrades, AC bybee puriiers and upgrades to the analog stage, but the analog stage upgrades had no effect on the player's use as a transport.

We had intended to use a stock Sony, but I forgot to set the digital out option to ON and had difficult doing so at the show without a monitor.  I ended up swapping it for another Sony 9100ES that was also at the show.

Given the upgraded/modified sources that supplied the VDA-2, how does one know if it was not the modified sources or the VDA-2 that anyone heard making the sound being noted in the messages?
