Hi,

I am visiting the US in ten days time and want to pick up some Teflon insulated CAT5 similar to that supplied by Hugh in the kits.

Can anybody please tell me the Radio Shack part number so that I get the right item.

Many thanks.

Brian

Brian,
The wire you want is Belden 1585a, Teflon insulated 24guage copper.  You can get the details by typing 1585a into the search window at:
http://bwccat.belden.com/ecat/jsp/Index.jsp?&P1=undefined&P2=undefined&P3=undefined&P4=undefined&P5=undefined&P6=undefined

Please note that although the individual wires are Teflon insulated, the outer jacket is PVC.  I just cut the outer jacket off and throw it away.  I'm not sure if Radio Shack carries this wire... they used to, then they quit carrying it, and I haven't looked in the last year or so.  I suppose that you could search the Radio Shack website for a part number.

An alternative might be the Vampire magnet wire sold by Michael Percy ( http://www.percyaudio.com/ ), 26.5 guage, $5/50 feet.

If you are visiting Minneapolis, I could just give you a few feet.

Good luck,
Peter

Hi Brian,

If RatShack doesn't carry it (as Peter has duggested), I would've thought any cpmmercial cable supplier should have it.

BTW, if you want the same cable but with a teflon jacket, the Belden No. is 1585ls.  This makes good perfroming and relatively inexpensive speaker cable for long runs.

Andy

Thanks Peter,

Brian, Peter's advice is exactly correct.  This is the stuff I use to good effect!

Enjoy your trip!

Cheers,

Peter, many thanks for the info and your kind offer.  Andy and Hugh many thanks also.

As (bad?) luck would have it, it was a typical IT industry ‘Kick-Off’ event with the whole day pre-programmed from the 07:00hrs power breakfast    to being chucked out of TGI Friday’s at 02:30hrs the next morning!    The event was in northern New Jersey so there wasn’t a ‘rat-shack’ in the area anyway.

I read some info with a conclusion that teflon or polyethylene give similar results.

True / False?
