Dumb question but will Blue Ray players qualify as universal players.  Will one be able to play their existing DVD's, CD's on a Blue Ray machine?

"Universal" will now have a new defintion, and needs to include SACD, DVD-A and DTS-HD and Dolby HD.  So far, this Pioneer announced only gets two out of four (the latetr two), whcih is surprising; I was under the impression that TrueHD (Dolby) uses MLP, and therefore DVD-Audio discs ought to be backwardly compatible.  Maybe TrueHD is not mandatory on Blu-Ray.

Its not completely ruled out ...but B/R players and HD players will not support dvd-a/sa-cd although I read were it was a possiblity for sa-cd on B/R....I would not hold my breath.

B/R will play cd....and upconvert current sd dvd to 1080p also.

That lineup makes me want to wait until generation 3 of the players.

Me, too. That's basically what I did with DVD as well.

But this can't be a surprise to anyone.

I'll never forget that one, fateful week where I went to Best Buy and it was mostly VHS tapes and what not, and then literally one week later, there was this incredible paradigm shift in the store and there was nothing but DVD's everywhere instead. When was that? Late 90's?

That's the kind of situation I'll be looking for again.

For me, personally, I couldn't be more disappointed that this "format war" is actually going to go forward.

Anything less than a settling out like was done on the DVD format is a disappointment to me, so I'm fairly displeased with both sides of the fence and I hope they all learn a very painful and expensive lesson for going forward with this BS.

I'll get my PS3 because I'm a gamer and I'll use it's BR capabilities, but anything beyond that? Forget it.

My first thought in this battle was to side with HD DVD for a variety of reasons.  Then it seemed like everyone jumped ship and went with Blu-ray, with only about 20% of the studios (if that) promising exclusive HD DVD support.  I was saying HD DVD was dead on the vine.  But then now they are announcing a release of HD DVD in March for $499, which really isn't much more than a good DVD player, and I have to rethink.  Especially with the HD DVD add on for the Xbox 360 announced, which I will definitely be getting if it less than $200.  Now my prediction is this: instead of Blu-ray crushing HD DVD in 2006 like I had thought before today, I will predict an extended war that Blu-ray will eventually win.  Most movies will be available on Blu-ray and some on HD DVD, but there will be a few HD DVD exclusives that will piss of Blu-ray owners for some time until Toshiba throws in the towel.

Looking forward to Fifth Element and Serenity in HD.

I forgot to add, I am also looking forward to buying a PS3 as my blu-ray player.

Thoughts?

Great post. :)

That's basically where I'm at with it all.

The PS3 is the closest in terms of potential price that the BR side has to go against the $500 Toshiba HD-DVD player, at least on paper.

The real trick is: Timing, on both sides.

I just can't get over the fact that pretty much every leading consumer electronics company EXCEPT Toshiba, Intel, Sanyo, and MS are all behind Blu-Ray.

That has to mean something, even before we start getting down to tech specs or the movie studios.

Personally, I'd much rather buy a product from names like Sony, Panasonic, JVC, Pioneer, Samsung, or LG any day of the week before I'd every buy a Toshiba or a Sanyo product.

And where are the obvious, marquee titles like Star Wars films, Godfather films, Toy Story films, Titanic, Terminators, etc. ?

It's the same argument we see with people balking at HD on cable or satellite right now: Not enough compelling content to justify the expense.

There are a handful of titles in there that are interesting - Fifth Element, T2, Apollo 13 and The Matrix's to be sure, however, it's not gonna be worth $500+ in order to do so.

This format war is just insane.  Didn't these idiots learn anything from the flop that was DVD-Audio and SACD after the HUGE win with DVD after they came together at the 11th hour?!?  Comon, throw us a bone here.

If they came out with a single format I'd even be willing to spring for higher priced hardware and be a much earlier adoptor of the technology KNOWING that the software I buy will work and I can get ALL the titles I want.

As it is, this just blows and they can all pretty much blow me right back.  Greedy F'ers...

Yes ...you can already pre order this chinese made Toshiba player and volunteer as a beta tester for HD DVD....which is not true HD at 1080i.

B/R ...on the other hand is 1080P with plenty of room for long movies like LOTR extended version using lossless audio.

B/R has far more studio and hardware backing than HD.

Were not comparing apples to apples here when this is described as a war.....full hd vs hd light is like a heavy weight thats about to beat the crap out of a welterweight. imo.

I'm probably buying a PS3, so I want Blu-Ray to win!

It seems like it's better on paper, but we'll see what happens.  Format wars are a drag.

I agree with that big time but we are dealing with consumers here and if you remember, Betamax was technically a better transfer but lost pretty easily to VHS.

Most early adopters(average joes) will not even pay 500.00 for a player though.

The majority of early adopters seem to be mostly for B/R which has the advantage of having a trojan horse called ps3 which will get B/R into milions of homes (average joes homes)....the same average joes who will not spend 500.00 on a player imo.

Show reports are saying that B/R looks fantastic via PS3 already so we know the ps3 will have B/R.

I already had 1080i with DVHS tape....its high time for 1080p and lossless audio :D

Any idea how much the PS3 will be?
I have not heard from any decent reliable sources.
Just found this article http://money.cnn.com/2006/01/05/commentary/game_over/column_gaming/

I don't think anyone knows for sure just yet...but if its 500.00 or less with B/R...they better announce it soon.

All I know is it does do 1080p and have at least one hdmi output.

My kid already has an XBOX 360 that cost 400.00 plus there hinting at about 300.00 for an hd dvd upgrade which puts the total at 700.00 + second controller.

Heres a list for lack of studio support for the formats.

HD DVD has an initial player for half price that does not have the hdmi 1.3 for lossless audio playback or 1080p.
The studios not supporting HD DVD are..
Sony
MGM
Columbia Tri Star
Disney
Miramax
Fox
The studios not supporting Blu Ray are..
Universal....who is rumoured to jump on board but time will tell.

So it looks like those that opt for the cheaper  50% Toshiba HD ...are not going to be getting movies like Star Wars or Aliens ect.

I've heard rumors lately that the PS3 won't be much if any more than the 360.  As for BR discs, the initial release list included probably ten or twelve absolute must haves for me.  I'm pretty stoked for BRD, but I'll need to buy a new PJ before then.
