Bryston speakers cable: Biwiring or not?
« on: 4 Jan 2006, 08:22 am »
I live in Milan (Italy) and I am the proud owner of a Bryston B100 SST integrated amplifier wich I am using with ProAC D15 Response Speakers. I love the sound of this combo and I am waiting to add the new Bryston CD player to it when it will be released.

Talking about cables.... I have Van Den Hul D102 MK3 interconnect cables and standard low budget speaker cables.

I found on the Bryston's Website they sell cables too so I asked James Tanner by email who answered me to buy their speaker cables with large spade on the amp side and bananas on the speaker sides.

Before I place my order, I would like to know if you think I should double the cables and run them in bi wiring mode or if this is not reccomanded by Bryston (or you) for some reason (impendece, waste of money...).

Thanks!

Nicola

You are going to get two anwers on this. One that says do it, that bi wiring makes a big difference, or, don't to it that bi wiring makes no difference. And.....both sides will argue to the death over which is right.

I am the latter. I have done it on many different systems, at the owners insistance. I have never noticed any difference. You are effectively increasing the wire gauge to your speakers, which of course won't hurt. But that's all.

I would suggest spending your money elsewhere, where it will actually make a sonic difference. I think bi wiring is pure snake oil.

This is my opinion based on personal experience. If you decide to do it and you feel it is a positive change to your system, then good on you.

To get the answer myself I did something this weekend. I cut my 6 Euros/meter cables in the middle and I connected them (just the cable, without any kind of connectors) in biwiring after I put togheter the two ends of the same polarity for the amp side.

With the ProAc D15 this worked out well, probably because their crossover works in parallel and I can hear on every CD I put on enough improvment in the sound to decide buying two pairs of good Bryston's cables.

Now, before ordering my new cables from Bryston I have some doubt...

How can I connect them to the B100's output binding posts using Bryston's connectors and not simply the cable?

I thought a way could be buy two pairs of Bryston's speaker cables, one terminated with babanas on the speaker side and with spades on the amp side and the other terminated with banans on both sides.

Will the B100's output binding posts be able to get at the same time both the spades and the bananas for each cable???

Could this damage in any way the amplifier?

Do you think Bryston with a little overprice will be able to get two pairs of their speakers cable and rework them linkin togheter the same polarity on the amp side and still using their connectors in order I can have 4 bananas connectors on the speaker sides and just two banana connectors on the amp side?

I already asked James Tanner but I am still waiting for the answer, probably he's very busy these days 'cause he always answered my previous questions.

Any suggestion?

Thanks

Nicola

Sorry for the delay in answereing Nicola but I was in Vegas at the CES Show.

The AMP end can use Spades and Bananas and the speaker end 2 sets of Bananas.

We can install the cables in a 'snakeskin' covering for you which will keepboth cables neat.

Thank you for your answer James, I will write to you in private to place my international order since there are still problems ordering from Europe through Bryston website.

I really believe a lot of companies should learn from Bryston's quality and customer support. I am very satisfied with Bryston and I hope you'll release soon your CD player.
