Well, I finally did it. I got my hands on a pair of Altecs.

I responded to Tubes 4 Ever's post on his Altecs here at AC.

I'm headed over to Indy to meet him this weekend where we are going to swap some gear. Should be loads of fun once I get the bass cabinets built.

I was wondering if you were going to jump on those...

Is this going to get in the way of the RedWine SB review?  ;)

Whoa, Cool!
So a whatcha gonna do with those  Replace the Lowthers? Not!

I picked up a new project here on AC last week also. It's one of those CD-PRO2M transport kits that showed up in the trading post unbuilt still sealed in the box. Scott, your gonna have to get crankin on that dac shootout cause I'm gonna need one for this new transport.

I'm just about done gluing up the fostex BLH boxes for my FE166E's. I'll probably have them done next week some time. I need to get some binding posts ordered though, I can't seem to find any long enough to go through 1-1/2" material. I guess I might have to counterbore and sink them in a bit.

Anybody else get any new toys?

Mark,
A trick I used to use with binding posts on thick panels was to cut out an appropriate shape in the panel, say a round cornered rectangle or even a circle in the intended location and mount the posts in some thinner but tough material (like thin hardwood, or even sheet metal) and attach that over the cutout. Keeps the posts easily accessible (sp?) and since the thinner material is well supported, vibration is not really a factor.

I don't want to give away too much before the review but I'll say this, they are a freakin steal. Call me if you want some more details.

Parts Express carries some longer ones for not too much money. Trouble is those are brass (as most economical binding posts are).

Heres a thought. Go to McMaster Carr online, find the 'all thread rod'. They carry solid copper AT rod. Get a couple of feet of either 1/8" or 3/16". Grind the side that goes inside your cabinets flat so it heats easily with a soldering iron. Then mount these to you cabinet using solid copper nuts and washers that can also be had from McM Carr. This should sound much cleaner than the typical brass binding posts.

Willie,

Their out of an old pair of A-7's. It the 416 woofs, 511 horn with the 802d driver and the 500g crossover.

Any suggestions on the bass cabinet? Or should I just calculate them from the T-S params and go from there?

Oh what to do for a cabinet.....?

My suggestion would be look at T/S params, etc. Put together a couple of simple B.R. boxes with the horns on top and go from there. I'm still trying to decide on the final version for my Altec setup. I would love to have them upstairs in our entertainment room, but anything with a 15 incher in it, is too big.
What happened to the cabinets your set came out of, are they still available ? I would love to horn load my woofer Front-load or Rear-load and still thinking I'd like to hear a Karlson cabinet, thats still a possibility.
Anyway Deadfish and I welcome you to the world of Altec sound.
  Have fun!

Good-bye hearing.

Hello hearing aid.

Be careful.  It is likely that last year's 114.5 db level record will be shattered!

Naw, Mike, you got it all wrong!

High efficiency Altecs are some of the best 'hearing aids' in the business!

Ask my son; when he listens to the hifi, he takes his devices out of his ears and grins.  :)

Likewise, welcome aboard, Scott!
Looking forward to what you do with your 'stuff'.

Happy New Year, y'all!

Working on some new toys for fun. A First Watt (Nelson Pass) F5 clone that runs 25+ watts class A--direct-coupled, low distortion, wide bandwidth, high resolution. I'll add my own twist to the power supply, wiring, connectors, mono construction, etc?. and should end up with a sweet little amp. Next is the M2Tech HiFace 24/192 USB. I'll mod it to accept an outboard 5VDC battery supply---may be a nice low cost way to play up to 24/192 hi-res files from computer. Should be ready in a couple weeks, if locals want to hear them in my system or theirs (after I've played with them a bit--of course).  :D

Got the F5 clones up and running and boy are these great sounding amps--neutral, clean, extended and relaxed with some of the best low level detailing I'ver ever heard. These little amps also got big ones--right now they're driving my big woofer towers (2 ohm load) and not even breaking a sweat. Anybody with 90dB+ efficient speakers looking for an amp should definitely consider the First Watt F5. Any locals that want to hear or try them, let me know.

90dB+ sounds right up my alley.  I'd like to hear them, but I've got so many concerts coming up, I'll have to wait until after Christmas break.

Chris, I would like to try them after the new year rolls in, and I get the basement shaped up a little. I'm working on an open baffle idea for the Altec 604s, and as always the KHorns stand in their corners.  :green:
