Tried it yesterday.  It works!  Defintely so much better now without the centre speaker.  I must clarify that my screen is only 92" and the front speakers only sit about 2' out from the sides of the screen.  In addition,  my fronts are JM labs, and I have Mirage for centre.  Without the centre,  the sound seems to blend and more coherent...this is not only for the dialogue parts, but also for special effects such as the opening sequence of Episode III with spaceships flying around.  They just seem to "zoom" all over the place now in real time... OK..I am more into 2 channel than HT. My HT is not set up properly, with no calibrations done, etc.  Maybe that is why getting rid of the centre improves so much more. :D

Having a center channel specifically made as a match for the front L&R helps a little. It's not surprising what you doing before didn't work.
