Having the Sassons speakers here convinced me I need room treatment.

I found a source online for Sonex that is reasonable.

My question is this. Could I staple the foam to the wall rather than glue? I figure that way, if I ever change rooms, I won't ruin both the foam and the wall, and I can move things around to find the best spot for the panels.

I don't see why it would matter, but thought I'd ask.

BTW: my goal is to kill 'slap echo'.

A light dose of spray adhesive works ok. It will come off fine if you don't over do the spray.  I think staples would be a problem.  Go to Home Depot and get some 3M spray adhesive.

Doc,

You might want to consider glueing it to some inexpensive boards that you can screw into the walls.  Peg board is cheap and would work, so would any 1/8" board you can find.  Staples and tacs tend to tear the foam.

I had large areas of Sonex up for over ten years (behind the front speakers).  I used the pegboard method.  I glued the sonex to the pegboard and then simply hung the pegboard on small nails throughout; the holes in the pegboard work nicely.  Then it basically lifted off after many years.  I first tired velcro and some staples, but, as Rob said, it tends to tear.  A light glue layer is perfect, and pegboard is cheap.

Thanks guys. Great idea on the 'backer' boards.

If the foam is mounted on peg board, would the whole thing be more effective if hung on the wall w/ an air gap behind rather than flush on the wall? Or does this sort of thing only work w/ the compressed fiberglass type traps?

BTW: Marbles. I had to take down the cheap mattress type foam you saw here before. Even though I don't have a WAF issue, I do have clients in the studio and it just looked too cheesy. I've always thought Sonex was pretty cool though.

An air space works with foam too, but as soon as you add a rigid backing like Masonite any benefit is removed.
