Hi James,

I would love to see a Bryston digital source (CD or SACD).....

What can you tell me about this? Is Bryston going to release a CD/SACD player in the near future?

Thank you.

Hi FM,

We are working on an outboard DAC a CD Drive and a complete CD player. It will be Redbook only - no SACD.

James...

This is FANTASTIC news!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can you put a set of Variable unbalanced outs on the complete player with a nice remote contolled volume pot?

Players like the great SONY XA7ES are still in great demand for those of us who cherish the shortest and cleanest signal path possible... having the option of skipping a preamp in the signal chain is golden.

Isn't there some concern with variable DSP volume controls on CD players of noise increasing as you lower the gain from unity?

The XA7ES has an ANALOG volume potentiometer... I have a Sherwood Newcastle CD980 which also has an analog controlled set of outputs...

An EXCELLENT player for the money...

James, audiophiles always complain about "losing bits" as digital attenuation is used, but in practice, there's no subjective quality loss until like roughly >10-15 dB of attentuation is used to my ears.  Until that point, digital volume control is FAR, far more transparent than even the all-out analogue volume controls.  I've used plenty of both.  If 24-bit or 32-bit internal DSP processing is used, even more decibels can be shaved off without subjective quality loss.

I would suggest having internal jumpers (like Benchmark DAC) inside the Bryston DAC that users can use to set different gain settings tailored to their system gain so that digital attentuation doesn't need to shave off audible bits.

I spoke with Mr Edvard Potisk, the manager of Avitech (the importer of Bryston for Austria and Eastern Europe) about the CD player and transport and this is what he told me:

I was surprised about CD player & transport since we are waiting for that already more than 1 year and my last information was that it will not happened so soon. I just spoke with Brian Russell, President of Bryston and he told me that they are really working hard on that and we can carefully expect actually not CD but High End DVD-Player, but not sooner than second half of 2006 or even on the end of 2006, for external DAC they will be available sooner maybe in 2-3 months.

What can you tell me about this James? Are we really going to have a CD player and transport or just a DVD player?

Thanks

Hi,

We originally looked at doing a Universal DVD player but given the uncertainty of SACD/DVDA/HD-DVD/Bluray we decided to move away until all that gets sorted. I sent out a questionaire to all our Reps and Dealers and we had about an 80% postive response to the idea of a straight Redbook state of the art CD player.

Sooooo we decided that we would start with the outboard DAC then use that research to do a Separate Drive and combined Drive and DAC (CD player).

The DAC should be 2-3 months and the drive and CDplayer we hope about 6 months.

Hi James,

I guess upsampling or oversampling will be out of the question.

Looks like Talk Electronics Thunder 3.1b CDP.  Camelot is a good guess, though, as only a few companies use the Anagram chip, including Talk, Camelot, and AudioMecca.

Hi James

I am in New Zealand.
I have just ordered my B100 SST.
Now I read that there is a CD Player due in about 6 months.
That's great news.
Can you tell us anything more in terms of specs and expected pricing?

Many Thanks
Eril

Yep the Anagram connection is what made me think Camelot.

btw. Anangram's latest generation DACs in their highest quality configuration has some insane analog specs.

-115db THD+N unweighted and 126db dynamic range

I have no idea how this thing sounds but they obviously did a lot of engineering to shine on these measurements.

Cheers

This is a great news!

I live in Milan (Italy) and I purchased a couple of months ago a Bryston B100 SST integrated amplifier wich I am using with ProAC D15 Response Speakers.

I love the sound of this combo. I was looking for a good CD Player and I was ready to go wih the Meridian 588 or G08 but after I read Bryston will soon have his own player I will surely wait for it!
