Converting a 10b sub to balanced outputs?
« on: 22 Dec 2005, 03:54 pm »
How expensive would it be to convert an unbalanced 10b sub to balanced outputs? Based on the schematics, it seems a board in the back needs to be swapped out. Any other changes?  I just picked one of these up on ebay and hope to be able to use it, but if the conversion is too involved, I may just sell it and build a crossover from scratch.

Right now I'm not sure if I really will need to do this, but the designer of the amps I am currently building highly recommends to use true balanced connections rather than a converter cable or some other unblanced to balanced wiring inside the amps.

Hi Peter,

The Balanced version of the crossover is quite different than the single ended. Not only is the backboard different but the circuit boards themselves are different.

It would not be cost effective to change an RCA version over to a Balanced version.

I was afraid of that. Well, I'll try the "converter cable" approach first. The problem would be the same if I had a balanced 10b, because my source isn't balanced either.

thanks for clearing this up before I wasted a lot of time pondering a conversion of the outputs with transformers or opamps...
