Velodyne vs. Earthquake
« on: 19 Dec 2005, 06:10 am »
I've supposedly sold my Velodyne HGS-15 (couple of deals pending in case one falls through) and am now going to buy 2 subs to replace it for our home theater room.

I've pretty much narrowed it down to 2:

Earthquake MKV-15 vs. Velodyne HGS-15X

Pricing will be basically the same for both.

I know it sounds crazy that I'd go back with the HGS after just selling mine but I can't get the same matching finishes between the old model HGS and the new model.

Any ideas on which would be better for pure home theater use since I'm a 99% HT guy? This is a tough decision for me.

Sonnie,I would stick with the Velodyne. They have never mis-represented
their low frequency extension capability, peak SPL output vs frequency or their distortion specs. This is very rare thing among subwoofer mfg.
If you consider another brand of subwoofer it should out perform the
Velodyne in all areas and have the  MEASUREMENT GRAPHS to back up the claims made for it.  Accept nothing less when it comes to this sort of product.

I just thought I would throw in another option for you. I had the Velodyne ULD-15 for many years, finally it went out and bought the HGS-15X. I did not like it. Muddy and no real punch. I sold it and being that I am a ACI fan, bought the ACI "Maestro" It blows the Velodyne away! Way more punch, tighter low end and goes below 20hz. Then I added the R-DES to fine tune it, I couldn't be happier. You should really check into it. It is a very fine subwoofer and the seperate amp means you don't have to run a power cord or a interconnect to the speaker.
