how to rebuild tweeter VC?
« on: 16 Dec 2005, 12:35 am »
For some unknown reason, I've popped another tweeter in my Merlin TSM. My power amps went bung the first time, but now I'm thinking the distortion causing this, is something in the preamp. It's NOT from high volume.

All that aside....I'm almost too embarrased to send this thing back to Bobby again. I'd like to try to fix it myself. It's a Morel MDT-30. I'm sure the part is available from Morel or maybe PartsExpress.

I can't find anything online about rebuilding a driver. Is this self explanatory or is there some advice one can offer me?

Thanks,

doc

Hi doc,
While I am not sure about this Morel tweeter, most voice coil replacements are a 5 minute job. Basically, they are a drop-in replacement. Let me  see what I can come up with on this tweeter for you. I'll be back

Hi Doc,
Go to parts express and type in the following part number. It is the replacement voice coil for the MDT-30 tweeter. A simple drop in replacement. Runs less than $20.

Part number # 277-016

Hey Bill,

Sorry to be a dunce, but that part you guided me toward is a replacement for the dome. Is that what I need? I thought it would be something that goes down inside the magnet structure.

What is it that burns out then? Those two fine gauge wires that lead to the dome?

Maybe I should have posted this in the newbie forum...

Doc, it's possible that you ARE clipping the amps and when you do, you fry the rather unprotected tweeter....any chance you've been playing Lucinda

Nope!!  It was Tom Petty.

When Steve was here w/ the Sassons...I put the Stratos back in, and for awhile everything was fine, then all the sudden.....stuff started to distort at a very moderate volume.

I thought for awhile it was a bad IC. Now I'm mystified. I'm guessing there's something wrong w/ the pre. It could be making the amps clip. But it's not me 'leaning on the gas'......at least this time!

I might have to rig up some sort of fuse for these speakers before long.

Yes, what I directed you to IS the voice coil assembly. The dome is part of the coil assemply. You will have to take the tweeter apart (just 3 or 4 screws) and the coil assemble will be able to be removed, install the replacement as the old one came out, reinstall the screws and you have a new tweeter.

Keep in touch with any further questions you may have.

Joe, it seems something is causing the amps to go into ocilation and blow the tweets.

What speaker cable are you using?  What pre?

Thanks

Hi Doc,

Marbles is correct in that there seems to be a situation causing you to burn the VC's. It could be DC current getting through to your speakers. Can you give us a rundown of your system and how long it took for your replacement to burn out?

We really need to find the problem before installing the new VC.

Marbles, Straley speaker cable, and the Tempest.

Bill, thanks again.
