OB in small room or Omega A8?
« on: 14 Dec 2005, 02:53 pm »
Currently using a pair of Triangle Zerius in my 8' X 14' sun room.  Using two Clari-T amps with cap upgrades, Thorens 124/modified Rega 250, Redgum phono pre, homebrew DACT attenuator, and a Marantz CD player.

All this talk about the Visaton B200 has me pretty worked up to try either an OB, Visatons "No Box", or Omega's A8.  I would like to compare the Triangles with the B200 in some form, but I think the room may be too narrow for an OB implementation.

Dmason, any thoughts based on how narrow the room is?  The Triangles are about 4' off of the back wall, but only about 8" away from the side walls.  There is also a large (double door) opening out to the living room in the center of the long wall.

All opinions are welcome!

An 8 foot wide room is tight for any stereo system.  Either would be more efficient and coherent than the Triangle.  One advantage of a narrow room is that beaming from an 8 inch whizzerless driver will be less of an issue.

B200 in OB won't have nearly the bass of the Triangles or the A8s, but you'll gain depth/openness.  Adding EQ, like the Beringer DEQ 2496 should take care of most of the loss of bass.

Why not buy the drivers and try them in temporary OBs?  Someone here at AC has mounted OBs against side walls to gain bass and image width.

I'd ask Louis.  Maybe he'd allow you to send in the drivers for a credit and build A8s using them.

Hi Slev,

Welcome to Audiocircle!

The Omega A8s work well in a small room (very easy to place...works well close to the wall).  I never tried the B200 OB in a small room, but setup might be a little tricky.  My guess is that the B200 OBs are going to need more room to breathe than an 8 x 14 room.

JLM has a good point here  :)

Thanks for your thoughts on this.  I may pick up a pair to experiment with over the holidays.
