iMod with AAC?
« on: 13 Dec 2005, 12:13 am »
Hi all,

At this point all my files are 128 kbps AAC.  While I understand that Apple Lossless sounds best, will the iMod make 128 kbps AAC files sound less listenable (e.g. hear all the flaws!) compared to a stock iPod or overall would the mod make the sound more enjoyable?

I am not sure when I will find the time to re-rip my CDs into Apple Lossless (crazy work schedule) then edit out the songs I don't like as I did before.

I also need to find a 60 Gb Photo iPod... I currently have a 3G 15Gb iPod.

Thanks!

- Jay

Dear Jay,

I hear the difference in quality between 128 Kb AAC, alt-standard-preset LAME 3.93 MP3, and Apple Lossless on my stock iPod listening via the headphone out.

IMHO the iMod would allow you to more clearly hear those differences. AAC files won't sound bad, but they will certainly sound more obviously what they are, a compressed format. That doesn't mean they can't be enjoyed, and when you have time to re-rip your CDs, you'll really appreciate the results of that effort.

Hi Jay,

I have to agree with Charles on this.

To fully appreciate the iMod, I recommend Apple Lossless.  This thread on headfi.com raises a similar question :

Hi Vinnie and Charles,

Thanks for the replies.  I'll be on the lookout for a 60 Gb Ipod Photo.  Its too bad the 60 Gb Ipod Video can't be modded as it isn't much more expensive to buy plus it would be handy to play video while on the go.  Is it truly a no-go, given that the case is a big thicker than the 30Gb?

Thanks a lot.

Hi Jay,

I modded a 60GB iPod Video and decided that I do not want to offer mods for it:

1) I don't like the sound of its dac as much as the iPod Photo

2) Modding it was very, very cumbersome due to the layout inside.  This would cost quite a bit more to mod and I rather not go there.

Hi Vinnie,

Thanks for the reply.  iPod Photo it is then!  I'll be on the look out for a good deal.
