GHM,

Actually this advice came from Eddie Vaughn, who has just started his own company after messing with tube amps for years:

I most love my Mapletree preamp (Have both the Magic 5 and Ultra 4 at present). It uses the 12sn7. Most luscious tone and a sweet forgiving treble is how it sounds in comparison to some 6dj8, 12au7, 12ax7 preamps I've heard in recent years. This preamp drives the 6sn7 input of Wright Sound amps. But mostly the 12sn7 based Mapletree has been ahead of one gainclone or another for increased musical enjoyment.

Now, is there a DAC that uses this lineage of tubes?

Well, today I ordered a kit from Peter and I'll be building my own version of the Patek, which I'm tentatively calling the DuFour;). I got the premium parts kit and I ordered Cardas binding posts and RCA jacks from diycable.com. Power will come from 4 12V SLA batteries (as if there was any other option?) and I designed an enclosure that a toolmaker from work will build for me:

I think the total cost with all the parts will come out to about $300, not including the machining work. I can't wait for all the materials to come in so I can get it built and see how it sounds...

The design is just an imitation of Peter's way excellent enclosure, so no plans to go to market with it :). I'm just trying the DIY thing for myself, the rave reviews in this thread and the ease of building it convinced me to go this direction over the Charlize amp. Anyway the price of the Patek is a deal for anyone who doesn't have a machine shop available to them - there's some serious cost in all this machining.

I might be interested in those batteries too, if I had 4 more I'd have a true dual-mono design start-to-finish.

I've owned the Modwright pre for a while now. Just bought a local set of used Druids. I also have the Butler TDB2250, It's a good combo, but not "magical". After reading about all the praise on the Patek, I am curious to try one out. Is everyone still enjoying their Patek?

Not sure what happened above, over anxious submit finger I guess.

Curious if anyone has any updates on the Patek? I am considering either it or the new RWA Signature 30 for use with my Modwright and Druids.

Hi MCA,

I've been happy with the Patek in a RWA SB2/AS NOS DAC/Patek/BB FTA2000 setup.  Since you have the ModWright Pre and Druids, I predict the Patek will be da bomb to your system.

This is a goofy question, but for those with the patek amp or any amp for that matter, if you leave the amp on all the time, do you do the same with your preamp?  I have the modright and am building a patek clone.  I want to leave the gainclone on most of the time, but would like to turn the preamp off when I'm not around (for tubelife if anything).  Any way to do this w/o getting some nice thumps on turn-on/off?

Thanks,
Dan

Dan,
Maybe you could add a muting switch for your Gain clone. This would solve the thump problem..if there is one.
