bulk solid-silver interconnect cables?

Hi,

I'm looking to make a pair of solid silver interconnects and would appreciate some help finding some good wire sold in bulk.  This is going to be a very short run cable... about .5m pair.  I've looked at homegrownaudio, but was wondering if anyone knew other sources.

thanks.

I am interested also in sources for silver/copper hybrid cable.  I.e. silver plated copper, etc...

There was an article in soundstage a while back here
http://www.soundstage.com/synergize/synergize200009.htm

the author made some silver ICs, and has a source for silver wire.

I have also seen posts at AA, probably in the cables forum where sources for silver have been mentioned.  Seems like a jewelery supply outfit is the cheapest source.

Myself, I am of the opinion that silver wire by itself is no holy grail and in some ways can be worse than copper.  So far, I have been buying the silver/copper hybrid story.  A while back I found on AG a supplier of bulk silver/copper hybrid cable.  I lost that link in a computer crash.

Now I am trying to find a source for silver/copper mix cable for DIY purposes. Anyone know where you can get your hands on such an animal?

Thanks bro!  That wasn't it, but was what I was looking for and a very simple way of going about what I am after.  I did find an OEM for the type of cable I am looking for as well as a distributor that I already have a friendly account with that sells the cable I am referring to (ATM I am going to leave this OEM unnamed, for my own personal reasons).

FYI, Luminous Audio (www.luminousaudio.com) sells silver plated copper spades (looks like the heavyweight type maybe big guns use) for $15 for packs of 4 and $150 for packs of 50.  Very very cool source of great DIY cable accessories.

Hmmm....I am not seeing any purchases of pre-fab cables in my near future.....I have been soldering on projects for the last 7 days....can't get enough of the fumes.....

Josh,
If we don't know the OEM, it's pretty hard to help you.
I know partconnexion sells some bulk wire, but don't know what you're really looking for.

Here's two companies that will do high specification wire of just about any particular type, form, gauge, anything:

They'll do Silver (to 99.9999%), Gold (to 99.9999%), or Copper (to 99.99999%) in wire, sheet, foil, microfoil, or single crystal.
 - http://www.allchemie.thomasregister.com/olc/allchemie/pagecu.htm/ and http://www.allchemie.thomasregister.com/olc/allchemie/

MaTeck will do just about any material to 5N - foil, wire, single-crystal, whatever you want - MaTeck.  I believe I spoke with these guys about a year ago to see quality wise how far I could go and if they'd do small orders.  I believe I got favorable responses at the time.  http://www.mateck.de/idxe.html

For people searching for resources, wire or otherwise, you reall can't beat Thomas Register.  Feel like starting your own cable company from soup to nuts with someone else doing the work based on your specs?  I'm sure you'll find plenty of people to assist you.  Just pop something in the search bar like 'silver' or 'copper' and be prepared for plenty of categories to show up for you.

This site just might have a few thousand companies you'd be interested in:

You'll probably also want to check out these two sites for contacts:
http://www.copper-ez.com/copper/
http://www.alloys-metals-ez.com/alloys-metals/

Also most of the audio cable manufacturers will sell you bulk wire in one form or another based off their wire, in all sorts of forms, silver, copper, coated, etc.  Try any of the following:

Black Art Audio http://www.jeack.com.au/~lucas/stuff.htm
Audio Note http://www.audionote.co.uk/cabs.htm
Arecore http://www.arcorelectronics.com/
Audio Magic www.audio-magic.com

Triodes http://www.triodes.nl/en-us/dept_65.html

I believe Cardas, DH Labs, and Kimber do something of the sort as well.

In regard to bulk materials, partially finished products, and everything in between, I can think of about a million audio products I could get this company to craft me and market or put in my system.  Want an instant audio business?  http://www.fwwd.com

Sometimes extremely cheap, sometimes not, throw 'custom cutting boards' in google and you'll have a million people willing to create interesting parts for under your components, interesting shelves, and chassis's for you.   Have a ton of random links laying around here...

Dust Covers -- First off, I really, really, really like the work the guy with this ad does  http://cgi.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?anlgtabl&1055722754 with custom Acrylic Dust Covers for your components, made to order for your specific components.  I think he does a terrific job.  At some point I will most likely do a purchase with him.....but that would require me to be pretty sure a component will stay in my system for awhile.  :-) ....and for my budget to increase for accessories.  But I thought about it, and wondered how many folks out there also do custom work, maybe not as thick, maybe not as well done, but that function well as dust covers..on the cheap.  So for example, I found this guy  http://www.displaycasej.bigstep.com/generic.html?pid=20 who does covers with various bases, etc.  Most work out there is obviously geared towards display cases, but with custom hinges, vents, anything -- could make for some cheap covers, or if they can do things thick enough, interesting bases or cases...

cjr,

thanks for your response.  that was more than I could ever have hope for.

Randy,

I found the OEM after I posed the question and I have a reason for why at this moment I don't want to mention a name (although I will in like two days).

Anyone interested in ordering a bulk amount of some silver/copper hybrid cable from one of the aforementioned manuf's for testing?  I think I can get a pack of 50 of the silver plated copper spade plugs at a bit of a discount and they could be added to the order.

This is where I get all my silver and gems. Luckily I am in town which saves shipping but they are known more for their mail order anyway. My buddy was a jeweler in manhattan and he said he wouldn't even mess with the guys in town sometimes and just order from here. Josh, you might have luck with some of the goldfilled or silver filled wire. I believe they do use copper as the base metal. If not you could look into sterling. Yeah Yeah I know, some people will poo poo that idea right away but all it is is like 96% silver and 4%copper. How bad could it be? The price makes it worth an experiment or two.

ps, dont frustrate yourself by trying to shop online. You have to have a catalog or just call. For reference regarding pricing I got like 12 feet of 22ga five 9 silver for like 8 bucks.

John,

Are you using this as interconnects for the AKSA?

My one OEM that I had thought of was RayChem (Tyco Elec).  They make a silver plated cable for Aerospace purposes that is a little elusive but has been reported to sound fantastic for audio use.

Hm, no, never got around to making it into ICs, sorta ran out of steam on the cables after a couple pairs of the JR ICs... will try it at some point. Don't actually have any equipment right now anyways.
