Help with connecting tranny to hypex soft start
« on: 28 Nov 2005, 01:57 am »
I'm having a problem figuring out the hookup from the soft start to the transformer. The tranny is an avel lindberg 500VA, and says 2x115v. Does that mean it has dual primary leads? How do you tell which input wires are 115v vs 0v? If it has dual primary leads, the soft start manual says to use the link terminals for the inner, I'm confused.  I think I have the rest of the build figured out, just need to start drilling some mounting holes.

Thanks, Ryan

Ryan,

Look on the side of the Avel, it should give you a little schematic of the windings with color codes and dots on the windings. Can you quote me what they say?  I think I know, since I have two Avel 500va trannies myself.

2x115 should mean it has dual primaries and dual secondaries, so that it can be wired for 230V or 115V.   You need to wire the two primaries in parrellel for the full 500va. The secondaries will be in parrellel as well and the dots tell you if the polarity is reversed or preserved.

Not sure if I understand what you mean about the softstart hookup.  Got a schematic?

Thanks Josh
On the input side it has blu and gry connected with a U and a dot on the blu, and vio and brn connected with a U and the dot on the vio. I have the output side under control. The schematic is at http://www.hypex.nl/ under products and softstart
This is one thing that would be bad to screw up.

so to parrellel the primaries, connect blu & vio together and brn & gry together.  choose either blu/vio or brn/gry for hot, the other neutral and then whichever you choose the dots tell you which will be the same (hot or neutral on the other side (secondaries).  Make sense?

Yes, that makes sense, that's how I was going to do it before I got the softstart.
The softstart has 2 ins, live and N, and four outs two 0v and two 115v, so, do I hook the blu vio individually to the 115v's, and gry, brn to the 0v's? What do they mean about using the link terminals if you have two primary windings?
Here;s the pdf for the soft start.

thanks for all your help, Ryan

So you have:
blu/vio = hot
gry/brn = neutral

The blu & vio have dots, so the dots on the secondaries are hot (they also need to be connected together, and un-dotted two secondaries together--neutral). So the two dotted secondaries (likely 115V in your explanation but can't be sure based on your explanation) are hot and the other two are neutral.

OK, I just took a look at the softstart pdf....it actually has the diagram for dual primaries like you have.  Blu in the PDF is neutral and Black/Brn is Hot.   It is confusing because it shows 0V/-115V, which should be 115V/0V respectively for non-inverting polarity transformers like we have.  In that diagram, I read 0V as Hot and -115V as Neutral, I could be wrong but it doesn't make sense otherwise.

According to that PDF (which I skimmed, not read thoroughly!) it looks like you connect the softstart before the transformer, not after.  This is usually the case for softstarts but I haven't tried this particular one.  Ask Kevin H of DIY Cable, as he has praticle experience with this one, or when I get more time I'll read the PDF and make for certain.

Thanks for trying Josh.
Sorry if I didn't explain well, always planned on putting the soft start before the tranny.
So I have dual primary with blu/vio (dot) hot and gry/brn neg
dual secondary  with blk 0v (dot), red 40v
and ora 0v (dot), yel 40v
Kevin referred me to the hypex info, hope he reads this. help Kevin
