Roku vs Squeezebox
« on: 20 Nov 2005, 09:39 pm »
Just got the Roku M1001 up and running via Windows Media10, so far I must admit, it sounds very, very good. Has anybody compared the Roku and the Squeezebox? What are the major differences sound wise and function wise? Am I loosing anything or gaining anything by going to the Squeezebox?

Any advice on better sound or ways of doing anything from the PC audio veterans would be appreciate.

Thanks in advance!

I've not tried/heard the Roku, but the M1001 upsamples everything to 48khz, so there will definitely be a difference in sound...

Hi neilr11,

Not too long ago, there was a thread similar to yours over here:

Vinnie & Phil, thanks for the reply. Can you explain why upsampling to 48khz is bad or makes the sound worse? What does the Squeezebox do to make it different?

Thanks.

The perspective/opinion on upsampling is mixed.  From an audiophile perspective, the issue with upsampling to 48khz is simply that the original data is being altered from its original 44.1khz state.  Not necessarily a bad thing from some peoples' perspective, but it's not really a "natural" upsampling technique, and there's no real clear benefit for doing it.  Upsampling to higher sample rates (eg. 96khz, 192khz, etc) has technical benefits in terms of filtering out digital artifacts, but the choice of 48khz is a little odd...

The Squeezebox essentially leaves the data unaltered at 44.1khz...
