Cary SLI-80 tube rolling thoughts.....
« on: 19 Nov 2005, 09:07 pm »
The unit is selectable between triode (50w pp) and UL (80w pp). FWiiW I listen in triode mode 90% of the time. I’ve burned it in for about 100 hours.

I use two Gallo powered subs.

Currently I’m using Spendor S5e 2.5 way speakers.

The Cary is bone stock with
*2 new Sovtek 6922s input buffers
*2 new “Electron” (China) 6SN7 GTs “pre-driver/phase inverters
*2 new Sovtek 5U4 Gs as rectifiers
*4 new Sovtek 6550 C output tubes

I have a nice selection of 9 pin mini tubes that might sub for the 6922s.

I have no other tubes. I love tube rolling; but know zilch about power output tubes.

*Please steer me towards a useful primer regarding output tubes.
*Please offer specific tube suggestions.
*I love the Cary as is-and believe it will be my primary two channel amp for some time. But better tubes will most certainly help.

Thanks,
Ed

EDS_,

Best sources of info on the 6SN7's, which I recently researched for a new tube amp, are:

 http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=119638&page=1

and

http://www.dehavillandhifi.com/6sn7_vt.htm

Be warned, 6SN7's are capable of stimulating tubelust, and if you are interested in "the best", it'll cost ya. I might say, however, you can get some incredible tubes/sound with many of the 6SN7's that come up for sale on Audiogon for not too much money.
