Ceiling mounting some Usher S-520s?
« on: 19 Nov 2005, 07:49 am »
Hello everyone...

A friend recently acquired some piano black Usher S-520s to use as rear channel speakers in a living room based home theater system.  With a very energetic toddler in the house, stand mounting them behind the sofa doesn't appeal to him.  In addition, the previous owner of the house already had wires run to speaker mounting points in the ceiling.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to securely mount a pair of S-520s from the ceiling in a manner that would allow them to be angled downward?  WAF issues definitely apply here...

Options considered to date:

1) Screw some sort of mounting bracket directly into the speaker cabinet. Compromising the cabinet's integrity and damaging that beautiful piano black finish make this option unappealing.

2) Some sort of chain/wire suspended platform, ala Marble's VMPS 626 mounts.  Problem: Very low WAF.

Any other ideas?  Many thanks!

I have seen, but cannot direct you to, some kind of speaker mounts, that were essentially "jaws" that could cinch tight to the speaker, but not actually pierce them.

Think about the way a vise works, and you have the basic premise - they were either at Home Depot, or Canadian Tire - not sure where you might search in the US, but I would try eBay for sure...

Thanks for the idea, Mark!  What you describe is one type of concept that I actually started searching for after I made my initial post.  I found a few stands and wall mounts that work on that concept, but nothing so far that looks like it could securely support a 6.3 kg/13.9 lb speaker from a ceiling.  I'll keep searching, including a quick trip to Home Depot tomorrow evening.

Any one else have any leads?  Thanks!
