I received a couple of SB3s to evaluate for mods. I was able to work out the digtal only mod fairly easily. The analog mods are going to take a little more time.

With the SB3 having it's digital buffer chip already supplied by a linear regulator, there is less that needs to be modded in this version. The main voltage input power supply caps get changed and the digital signal routing also get modded a bit. The digital output connector is changed to a WBT NextGen gold plated copper, 75 ohm connector.

This mod will be listed on the website shortly. It wil be offered for an introductory price of $100.00  

This will be for a limited time. The price is for the mod only and does not include the SB3 or any power supply.

For now, mods are being scheduled 3-4 weeks out.

At the present time, I am not planning on selling the SB3 unit itself. I am only planning on doing mods.

I have invested a tidy sum in the new power supply parts. Cash flow is very tight.

SB3 Digital Only Mods

The digital only mod for the SB3 is now listed on the BOLDER Cable website.

I am rather backed up on mods. I am taking appointments 4 weeks out.

I plan to spend the rest of today working on the new basic power supply. With any luck I should be able to post some pictures tonight.

FYI, for digital only mods in the SB3, all of the power to the digital buffer chip comes from a linear regular. This in turn gets it power from the main 5 volt input. None of the power comes from the internal switching power supply.

For the DAC chip, which is only used on the analog outputs, the digital section gets it's power from a linear regulator which in turn also receives the 5 volt main input power. None of this power comes from the internal switching supply. The analog power to the DAC chip DOES get power derived from the switcher. I can rewire this so the analog power DOES NOT come from the switcher, just like I do in the SB2.

I will have more on the analog mods at a later date.

The SB3 WILL sound quite a bit better when modded and used with a linear power supply in place of the switching power supply that comes with the unit.

Wayne, the above phrase is from your website. Do you offer for an additional cost any linear power supply, especially a high quality one that approaches batteries but without the hassle?

I will have two linear power supplies listed on the website by the end of the week.

I did offer a "Basic" regulated power supply.

I have just finished the prototype of the "Basic rev. 1" power supply today.

I will make a post about it soon.
