What is the proper set up.
« on: 2 Nov 2005, 09:02 pm »
My preamp came today and this is my first setup with components.  I assume that the set up should be Source to Preamp to Amp to speakers.
Any suggestions on how to set it up?  What are the things I need to avoid?

All i have now is bare wire, is it Ok to connect amp to speakers without termination?

Thanks Andy.

I should have some pics posted soon.

Congrats!!!
Sure, its ok to connect bare wire from AMP to Speakers...its actually better than having spades or bananas, less interference from the soldering/spades, etc...

I would use the shortest speaker cables possible and longer interconnects as to the other way around.

I see left/right going into the amp and the pre only has red and white.  How do they match up?
Red Right
White left?

Is there a proper proceedure to begin the break in period?

I have the amp, cd, and preamp connected.  I need to know if there is anything I need to do before I power the amp on.  Do I turn the amp on first then the preamp, and cd.  Is there another way that is better?

What about the volume.
How loud do I need to play it and at what levels.  Do I need to power on the amp for a period of time to Charge the caps?

Sorry if these are stupid questions.

buckeye:

Just start enjoying it by listening like normal.  They'll break in over time.

Order to turn on is Source (CDP), pre, then amp last.

Order to turn off is amp first, then pre, then source.

It probably does not make much difference on the source and pre, but always turn the amp on last and off first.

Just listen like you normally would...Klaus recommends that you leave his amp on all the time, but if you want to turn it off, turn it off.

Just don't get hung up on anything but enjoying the music.

Andy,
Have to echo what everyone else is saying. I'm expecting my Loreleis, monos, and upgraded Tempest soon, so I'll be "breaking in" as well.
The beauty of Klaus' equipment is it sounds great out of the box, but the improvements over time are stunning. Be patient. Basically, you enjoy it more and more during break-in, and the smiles get bigger as you realize what an unbelievable product he produces. Can't wait for my new toys!! Enjoy!

I'm not sure what amp you have, but if it is Odyssey, Klaus recommends they be kept on 24/7.

If you leave the amp on 24/7 what do you do with the cd and pre?
Do they stay on 24/7?

Man this is so much fun.
I am so glad I found Odyssey.

Turn the CDP off.

Not sure that it matters much either way with the Etesian.  The Tempest will send a pretty good "pop" to the speakers when it is turned off.  This is why people say to turn off amp, pre, then CD, and reverse when turning on.  I doubt the Etesian will do this  since it is passive.

I leave my Stratos on, but turn the Tempest off.  I avoid the "pop" by switching it to the HT bypass before turning it off.

Some cd players have a standby mode which reduces power usage, but keeps things "warm" (especially tubed players). I'd use the stand by for tubed players (they are a little more touchy), and simply turn off any other cdp.
I leave my amp on at all times, unless I'm out of town. Have fun!
