My SACD 1000 is dying
« on: 24 Apr 2003, 12:30 am »
Hi all,
I am bummed, my SACD 1000 started having transport problems last week.  Would not read hybrid SACD’s.  It fixed itself for a few days, but last night, it had more problems.  Had trouble reading some CD’s, put in a hybrid SACD, and it only found the CD layer.  Also skipped a little while playing a CD.   :bawl:

I have a feeling it will only get worse from now on, and it’s only a matter of time before it breaks completely.  The part of this that really hurts is it’s my fault, I bumped it while it was “burning in” this weekend.  I normally am very careful when I am near it, and its playing, but I forgot it was playing, while moving my amp, which was close to it, I bumped it.  It is on aurios, so they let it move when I bumped it, and probably dissipated a lot of the shock, but it has not been the same since.

This 1000 was modded by Stan Warren, and later by me, so I am sure the warranty is void.  That brings up the other bummer part of this.  With the changes Stan made, and the additional stuff I did later on, it was REALLY sounding good.  I had just made a bunch of cap swaps and put in some freds, and am very impressed by the sound of it now.

Now, I have a few options.

1. Buy another 1000, and use it for parts to fix my 1000.  Would probably cost $500-600 for this.
2. Buy the transport only, and put it in.  I am pretty sure, if I could get a new transport, it would fix my 1000.  Daisy appears to have them, and I have asked them if they would sell one, and how much it would be.  Daisy is set up to sell to OEM’s, so I am not sure if they want to sell just one transport to me.  Waiting to see what Daisy says.
3. Throw my 1000 in the trash, and get something else.  Maybe this was an omen, to give up on the 1000, and get another machine.  Right now, I am considering getting the Pioneer DV-45A.  I probably would have it modded by EVS.  This pioneer seems to be solid, do not hear about any problems with it like you hear about the 1000.  Also, Ric of EVS claims it sounds really good after modding.

Wondered what you guys thought about my predicament.

BTW, one of these days I will compile what mods I made to my 1000.  They are above and beyond what Stan does, and between Stan’s mods, and my changes, the 1000 sounds really sweat.  If it was working, I would be really happy with it.

Are you sure you didn't mess something up when you did the additional mods to your unit??

I dunno...any piece of equipment that you could damage by bumping it while it was up on Aurios...I'd say good riddance to...even if it sounded fantastic.  I can sympathize with the loss of a good sounding piece of equipment, but I can curse it for being so fragile.

On the other hand, the player has been opened up and the power supply modded by two different people since leaving the Philips factory. One of the modders could easily have done something WRONG to the power supply or messed up the electronics of the SACD 1000.  :o

One of the modders being me   .

Eric, yes, I could have done something wrong, and believe me, I have thought about it, but the player worked fine, with no problems after I installed the modded PS.  It only started acting up AFTER I bumped it.  I do not really believe in coincidences, I look for cause and effect.
I know you are getting another 1000, so you would probably rest easier if I messed up my 1000 by modding it, instead of by simply bumping it, but I really don't think that's the case.  The mod I made to the PS was really pretty simple, just changed out some caps, and put in freds for the bridge diodes.  I have made other more complicated mods on the DAC card, and it worked fine after those changes.
Believe what you want, but take some advice, treat your 1000 very gently when you get it.  If I decide to fix mine, I hope to set it up, and just leave it there.

As far as parts go for the unit, I'll bet the Philips repair facilities have a few on hand in their dumpsters

Dang Randy...sorry to hear the problems your having.  It's a shame really...the rest of the unit is really built quite well.

any way...best of luck to you getting it fixed...be sure to let us know just what had to be done...and if you wouldn't mind...could you take a couple pictures too...I don't know why...but I got this uneasy feeling in my stomach that someday...(knocks on wood) ok...enough of that talk...but you know what I mean.

   best of luck

Hey Gonefishin,
Sorry, don't have a digital camera.

However, the 1000 is pretty easy to take apart, just need special torx 10 drivers to do it, and I think a t15 is required for a couple screws that hold the IEC connector, if you want to remove the PS.

I do have a service manual on CD, if you or anybody else I know here wants one.  Probably want a couple bucks for it to cover shipping costs.  Kind of a pain to use the program, but it's nice to know what's inside.

Hey guys,
Just giving a little follow up to my story.

In a somewhat bizarre twist, my 1000 seems to be getting better, and I have yet to do anything to it.  This is strange because problems almost always get worse over time, things rarely fix themselves, but for whatever reason, I have had less problems with my 1000 over the last few days.

I am still waiting to get a replacement transport, but am not sure if I am going to use it as things look now.  However, things could change at any time.  One change I made recently (Saturday) was put it on a maple board, instead of sitting on marble tile laid over concrete.  Maybe the new platform is helping?

Hey Randy:

I note you have a "modded" Adcom.  I have an original GFA-555, that is sitting idle at the time, like to find a use for it.  What mods did you have, and who did them?

Hi guys,
time for another update.
My 1000 has taken a turn for the worse.  It's still working, but it does skip and have trouble reading hybrids again.
I tried cleaning the laser last night, in case it had dust on it, but that did not help.
My transport deal fell through, turns out the guy I was getting it from had scavanged some parts from the transport, and forgot about it, so the transport does not work anymore.
In the meantime, I told transam I did not need his unit, so he sold it.
Daisy never got back to me, and I think it will cost at least 400 to get a transport from them, I heard a pro2 cost overs $500 after shipping and taxes.

So, looks like I am in the market for a used SACD 1000.  Anyone have one with a good transport looking for a home?

Randy
