CDPlayer for about $500 or so

Hi all,

Well, I am about to buy a CDPlayer. I was considering the new updated MusicHall piece with the updated OPAmps and such, or the Cambridge 640. Any other suggestions? The other Chinese stuff sounds really good too, but I want to keep the price down. Now, I do understand that the best results could be had by separating the DAC and transport. Don't know anything about that stuff. Nope, don't want to go the computer audio route via the Squeze box and such. I'm still a bit old fashioned. Would like my CDPlayer to be that of a component. So any suggestions are definitely welcome. . Would like only new stuff.

If I had to do it all over again. I would go with a Dac first. There's plenty of Dacs new and used in the $500 price range.Hopefully your current player has digital coax or optical outputs.The average Cd player can't compete with a decent stand alone DAC in sound quality IMHO.

i'm all about used gear...and decks are a good thing because there are tons of them..

when I recently replaced mine, i went with the best 5 years ago had to offer. the flagship Toshiba SD9200. I think this thing was close to $2k new back in 2000. Its $500 used these days.
nice sounding class A deck w/a BEEFY transport. thing weighs around 30lbs I believe.

Have you ever considered the Arcam CD73T?- or the CEC CD-3300?
Both are only a bit above your price- but worthy contenders, FWIW..

I can really recomend the Rega Planet 2000 MKII CD-Player. A wonderfull piece with great sound, build quality and used price.

The Cambridge 640 is a great looking and sounding sounding cdp.I had a silver one in my rig for awhile and really really liked it. If you buy one from Audio Advisor, they have a 30 day return policy and you'd only be out shipping charges if you didn't like it. I'll second a used Planet 2000 for @$500.00 as they too are very very nice cdps. Offer this guy $500.00 plus shipping as it's been on the market for awhile

I'd wait two months. After talking to Dusty Vawter regarding his new dac, the VDA 2, I've no doubt the piece will be world class. Price will only be 600. For more details you'll have to ask Dusty as I don't feel like typing that much. Long story short though is that this new dac should sound about as good as anything made until you get into the mega thousands of dollars and even then good luck telling the differences. It is a completely new design. Another thing I like is he always uses high quality parts too. Wait like me and buy yourself a nice Xmas gift!

Now that I said all that the greatest bang for the buck may be the Behringer DEQ 2496. I've got a fully treated dedicated listening room with bass traps and it's LEDE. The Behringer just took my system to a new level. There's no getting around physics of sound and no matter what your room or system it can be made to sound better. Once I learned that this thing has digital in and out I had to get one. Even the dac in it is decent though I've learned. My system is: Krell KRC-3 pre, Sony dvd player transport, Innersound ESL amp and Vmps RM 40's. For the money it's going to make more improvement than any dac could possibly do. No contest, wipe out city. I should add that with the microphone which is really mandatory you can get the ECM 8000 mic and the Deq 2496 for under 350 delivered to your door.

A used Jolida JD100A. Or the AMC CD6B-5404AS valve output CDP. Both under $900 new. You won't find anything better under $2000, ime. Even the often hyped Cary tubed CDP units are made in China I believe, so why worry?

Hi Weez, Well, I have hBoth are only a bit above your price- but worthy Hi Weez, I have heard about the CEC33, that's the one that Audio Advisor used to carry. Asking them about the player, they said the Cambridge and now the newer Music Hall beat it hands down. Not sure what the price of the Arcam player is. Somewhere about $650 isn't it?

On a canadian forum, the same guy is offering it for 650, so i'm inclined to believe taht this price is $650 cdn. Throw him an offer for $500 cdn, and you could pick it up for $425 usd. It's very worth it in my mind.

Last I checked, the Arcam 73 list price is $699.

The CEC CD-3300 that is selling now is an upgrade from the days when Audio Advisor sold them. Price is $590. Limited dealers in the states.

I agree with others here, that if you can find a Rega in your price range- it would be well worth it.
