I'm trying to use SB2 with a downstairs computer while my music is on the upstairs computer (in folder "music" of drive C). What address do I put into "music folder" on the downstairs computer? I wish they had a browse button next to the address space.

I may be mistaken, but I'll give this a whirl...

You need to have slimserver running on one of the computers.  Typically I think you'd run it on the computer where the music is stored.  Then from the other computer you would just enter the following URL:

http://localhost:9000/

Where you would replace "localhost" with the IP address for the computer running the SlimServer software. (ex: http://192.168.0.1:9000/)

So you can control it from a computer that doesn't have the songs?  That's cool.  When can I come over and check it out?

Idon't know if this can be done. So far, no luck.  Both Tuesday and Thursday are good for me. You choose.

Joe,

Let's try Thursday.  I'll pm you and ask directions again.  I'm interested to see the SB2.

Here's another possibility: Create a music folder on the downstairs computer.  In the folder, put a single file: a shortcut to the upstairs computer's music folder.  Just right-click from Windows Explorer or My Computer in the downstairs computer's music folder, and select New | Shortcut.  Then follow the instructions for completing the shortcut.  There's a browse button where you can browse to the upstairs computer.

Then point your SB to the downstairs computer's music folder with this shortcut in it, and it should scan the upstairs computer's music folder and incorporate it into its database.

Yep, it works just like I said.  You can control the slimserver from any computer on your network (with that address thingy).  It works EXACTLY like when you are running it on the same computer that's running slimserver.  No need to mess w/ crazy network paths or even shortcuts (unless you need to for another reason).

BTW, that's the same way that those fortunate enough to have wifi PDA's control thier SB2's as they walk around thier house.

Success! Thank you. The other ways didn't work for me. I'm sure I was screwing something up.

Excellent.

Depending on how much music you have, and how fast your hard disks and network are, it can take quite a while to do this rescanning.  Let it go for a bit...then report back.

BTW, if this doesn't work to your satisfaction, I do think jonwb's suggestion is probably the best route: load SlimServer on the upstairs computer, have SlimServer scan the library on your upstairs computer, let your SB find the upstairs computer, and if you want to use the downstairs computer to control SlimServer as well as using your SB, simply point your web browser to the address of the SlimServer (if you can't find this local web address, I can help you find it).

I'm such an idiot! Johnwb's way is the way to go. It was so easy. I didn't realize until Johnnylighton's last post that I was supposed to put http://ipaddress:9000 into the browser address window. I was putting it in the "music folder" address box on slimserver. Now it works perfectly. You can find the address easily by just checking the settings on the SB2.

Thanks again,

Joe

That was my problem, so I'll chime in (again).  On the computer running slimserver pull up a DOS command prompt (Start-Programs-Accessories-Command Prompt).  At the command prompt type "ipconfig".  The first IP address listed (on the line "IP Address")  is the IP address for that machine and the IP address you want to use for the previously mentioned URL.  That URL will work on any computer (or PDA) on your network for controlling your SB2('s).

Good luck!

A off the beaten path question, but I got a Squeezebox 2 today and I noticed that the acrylic window that is in front of the display is a tad shot in one side, thus exposing the inside part of the case....the side next to the IR receiver.  Is this common or do I have a defective unit?

I've not seen one that way. Perhaps it just shifted in transit and you may be able to slide it back to the correct position. Certainly worth a try IMO.
