Audio Alchemy CDP-Can't remember name.
« on: 19 Oct 2005, 03:14 pm »
I'm trying to remember the name of a full size CD player that Audio Alchemy offered in the mid 90's. It was a full range design with built in DAC on a Sony transport. There was a review of it in Stereo Review.
Thanks

Hi,
You might be thinking of the ACDPRO. It is a one box piece. The transport is the Pioneer stable platter.
I have one by the way and still think it sounds pretty good.
Hope this helps

Chris,

ACD-Pro was not the model number. This CDP was an entry level model, that retailed around $400.

Dennis,

You may be referring to the DDS (Digital Drive System) III. I recall it was reviewed in Stereophile as a transport, for which it was intended, although it came with basic Sony DAC installed. It used a Sony ES transport, and retailed for $699 I believe. It was rather tall, with a nicely sculpted black aluminum face.

I have one...in pieces in the basement. The DDS was notorious for refusing to play CDs after awhile due to a ribbon cable that was overly stretched every time the drawer opened. One of the former AA gurus in California was offering fixes for awhile (this was after AA went under) by replacing the ribbon cable with individual thin awg wires. Alas, the ribbon cable itelf has not been available from Sony for quite awhile.

Hope this helps. I do recall that AA made another player that retailed for less than the DDS III, but can't recall its name.

Someone on AudioAsylum figured it out. It was called the ACD-1

Thanks

ACD-1 was not based on a Sony transport.
DDSIII was the only Alchemy model that used a Sony mechanism.
