Help choosing a budget 5.1 receiver pls
« on: 18 Oct 2005, 02:48 pm »
Hi all...

I am in search of a "budget" 5.1 integrated receiver. It will be strictly HT listening of TV and DVDs as I have a sep 2-channel system. My L/R is around 12x15 and I have some Wharfedale 4ohm - 89db - Moviestar speakers on stands, dont have the sub yet, as the used pkg i bought off Agon dint have the sub. I am open to older receivers that are 5.1, as well as newer receivers. I would like to stay in the $400 < range - so even used equip is acceptable. I am fond of MOS-fet sound - but need it to be able to drive 4ohm - whatever the choice. I like warmer sound, as opposed to bright/clinical. I have a Sony DVD that has discrete 5.1 feeds as well as digital-coax feed - NSP model or sumfin, at the office now - not sure model #.

Many thanks in advance...
Nate

That sounds to me like a descritption of a Pioneer VSX-1015TX-K or the older model the VSX-1014TX-K.

Agree w/Bubba, the 1014/1015 is a nice receiver.  Though not sure how well the Pioneer will do on 4ohm speakers?

Might also look at a Yamaha 657.  Should have enough power and have heard the newer Yammie's have a warmer sound than their previous versions.

Lastly, look at Harman Kardon.  Again good power receiver and the warmish sound you are looking for.  I believe the 335/435 will be close to your budget constraints.

If you are comfortable with used, go that route as your $ stretches a bit farther.

If the 4 Ohms is a concern, you might want to check out NAD receivers as they can handle loads as low as 2 Ohms.

I've got a friend running a 1014TX w/4ohm speakers with no problems. I've been running a 39TX w/4ohm speakers for a while. I know someone with a 912TX running 4ohm's as well as someone else running a 36TX w/4ohm's. And I think my old 26TX is still being used on 4ohm speakers.

Guess I could say that Pioneer's run 4ohm speaks just fine...

A used outlaw audio 1050 you could pick up pretty easily too.  Or the new model if you have the cash.  They make really good products.

I use the Cambridge Audio Azur 540R for 5.1 listening (DVDs, HDTV, etc.)
I highly recommend it: very "musical", not cold and clinical. You should be able to pick one up within your budget.

Look at www.cambridgeaudio.co.uk for the specs.

Find a nice Marantz 7000 for around $200-250. No problem w/ 4 ohm load, 100 WPC. Warm , full bodied sound.  That's what I had before I just got the Panny X55.

I finally set up my HT with Panny SA-XR55 yesterday, and so far it has surpassed my expectations in looks, build, features, and sound.

I bought one brand new with warranty for $220; search the web.

It's rated for 6 Ohms, but many people have used 4 Ohm speakers without problems.

I would be cautious running those speakers w/ the X55, but at $220- you could always send it back. Mine sounds QUITE astounding w/ my Monitor Audio's (8 ohm).

Thanks for the replies guyz - MARKLIVIA you have a PM about your SR7000  :D

I currently run for 2-channel - a Marantz 2226B receiver with a Hegeman Hapi2 preamp into some vintage KLH Model 17 2-ways which I rebuilt the Xovers in recently. I also own a rare vintage Marantz Model 25 (69-75) that I love in my 2-way system also. I am wanting to update the Model 25 to use full-time - tho it isnt MOS-fet - it really has a nice warm sound for jus 30 wpc.

Best regards - love this forum.
