looking for good 2 channel amp
« on: 14 Oct 2005, 03:12 pm »
I am looking for a good 2 chennel amp.  Something over 100 watts a channel @8 ohms.  i am looking for something on ebay more than likely.  I want to spend around $500 or less.  Possibly get one and have it modified.  What are some of the amps people have used or had success with having it modified?
I know this is a vague question, but give me some of your opinions.

I plan on driving a pair of EFE T-20 speakers with these.
Here are the specs:
Drivers:
Woofer –Dual 6 ½” woven wool (8 ohm)
Tweeter - 25mm soft dome (8 ohm)
Frequency Range:
50Hz – 20kHz +0/- 4db
Crossover:
Second order – 3000Hz/12db per octave slope
Impedance:
8 ohms
Sensitivity:
89db /1watt/1 meter
Power rating:
5 watts minimum
150 watts max (clean power)

thanks,
Dan

Here is one for you, but you really should state what speakers or drivers on speakers you plan to drive with the amp to get more helpful advices.

I would try and find a Forte 4A.

Yes, it is only 50 watts of pure Class A power, but it sounds and plays much bigger and louder than the rating would lead you to believe.

I've got a Nad 218THX amp. I'll sell to you if you are interested. 225 watts in stereo. 780 watts bridged in mono. Got the original Nad shipping box and manual. Real nice amp.

Are the EFE speakers the Ed Frias ones? At any rate, the speakers are described in the query.

Why 100 watts per channel with 89db speakers going down to 50hz by spec?

Must be a really huge room, a headbanger habitat or an artificial requirement which makes suggesting something decent a lot harder.

I too am looking for a $500 used amplifier but I need a minimum of 25 watts only.

A Forte 4a would be fabulous but where the heck does one find one?

I am running a pair of Harmonic Precision Echelon 2.0s  Anyone ever heard of those?

I am thinking B&K EX4420 or Monarchy SM70Pro. Is either any good?

$699 buy it now for a Bryston 4B. More than 100W, admittedly, but you can keep the volume low, and the amp will still be there if you opt for hungrier speakers someday.

Take a look at the ART SLA-1. It has a sensitivity adjustement so you can use it as a single source integrated amplifier.
