Looking to buy a record player.....
« on: 14 Oct 2005, 04:33 am »
First off, while I would love to dump a hundred thousand into a setup..... I lack that funding.

What I do have is, http://www.tb-speaker.com/detail/1208_03/w3-871s.htm in some little ported boxes, and an old Rotel amplifier (I think it was actaully expensive back in the day, only place that might have specs requires a subscription). I have been playing music from my computer. I record every thing as .wav files, haha, yeah I use lot of hard drive space. I am using my laptop now, as I plan to sell my desktop, and to be honest I think the sound card in it is better then my Creative Labs Audigy 2. Weird that the Audigy 2 by tests is as good as say an M-audio 2496, or about, and my laptop gives it a thurough beat down? (T42 IBM)

Any ways, I would like to use LP's rather then CD's (I will keep my .wav stuff, I back it up on DVD's just incase). I am aware of their special qualitys....

I was thinking about using the money from computer, to buy an Ipod, pocketdock, and pocket amp with some Eyr or what ever headphones, but I really would not use it that much....

That is why I want to get a record player, and start a collection of records.... I am interested in the sound that comes from them, I love even crappy ones to some degree, it is just simply enjoyable.

Budget area, I would like to keep it under six hundred, which I know is basically in the crap range but hey, I am a college kid.

Thanks for the suggestions I am sure you guys will come up with.

You can get a decent table for $600.  I like Pro-Ject and Music Hall (which is built by Pro-Ject) in that price range.  I believe the Music Hall MMF-5 is under $600 with cartridge.

Could you provide links perhaps if you know them? I have not the time or money to be as involved with audio as I like, so when people refer to things I am lost.

Oh yeah, I have no fear of DIY kits, I can solder just fine :)

Here is a reasonable starter table

or for a little more

he does not say if it comes with a cartridge.  Project and Music hall also make decent starter tables.  If you can find a used table, then you won't lose much when you want to sell it and upgrade.

I would save money for accessories, you need a record cleaning machine.  I made one out of a shop vac, old turntable, and some commercial cleaning fluids and brushes.  Not too hard to do, and much cheaper than the commercial versions.

You also need money for LP's.  Luckily, you can find cheap LPs at thrift shops, but that's why you need a RCM.  I always clean a thrift store record before I play it.

Good luck on you venture into analog.

Got any links to a DIY page on that? I can find a cheap who cares, it cost nothing to begin with turntable to make a RCM with, I am pretty sure. Shop-vac, well not in my dorm room, but perhaps some thing.

Can you clean by hand?
