Power Cord
« on: 30 Sep 2005, 02:42 pm »
I just bought an Odyssey HT3 used.  It will be here on Tuesday.  I want to make sure the power cord will be long enough, or buy another in advance so the new amp can be up and running immediately.  Can someone tell me how long a factory cord is?  Also, any suggestions on reasonably priced aftermarket cords if I need one?  What are the details on cords available from Odyssey?  I went to the Groneberg site, but my 3 years of H.S. German didn't get me very far!

Thanks!

I use a VH Audio flavor 4 cryo cord with my Symphonic amp.  It is a very large, thick cord.  Be sure to burn it in for a while.  The sound is fantastic!  The price: $160 and up depending on your connectors.

Volex makes a good, solid, shielded cord. Very inexpensive, and available in most any length you need. www.mouser.com carries them, among other places.

Thanks for the suggestions for other cords.  I'll check into them.  Can anyone tell me how long the stock cord is??  I want to know if I'll be able to plug in when the amp arrives.

I use a "Magic Power" from signal cable on my Stratos & Tempest and just got another one as I will be making the Mono Extreme plunge soon. They are $59 for a three foot cord and $4 for each additional foot. It's a very nice cable 10AWG with good connectors I'm quite pleased with them.

Someone else already provided info on the stock cord length, so I'll move on to PC recommendations. I second the use of the VH Audio cryoed Flavor 4. I use one for each of my Extreme Monos, and they seem to work quite well together, albeit I put in at least 400 hours burn in on the PC (but it wasn't a big issue because that seems to be the minimum burn-in time for the Extremes). FYI - I used to have a Stratos w/cap upgrade, and used a cryoed Flavor 2 with that amp. I previously tried a Groneberg Quattro cord with the Stratos and liked it, but movement of my equipment made the point moot as the Groneberg was then too short. For my ears, with my gear, I prefer the VH Audio PCs. FYI - Klaus recommends running Odyssey amps directly from the wall outlet, not from a power conditioner or bar.

Also, to muddle things a bit, I note I have not tried a Groneberg TS Premium PC with my gear. I bring this up because I have some TS Premium ICs in my system, and I feel they are a distinct improvement over the Groneberg Quattro PCs. Thus, a TS Premium PC may be a better candidate to A-B against the VH Audio cryoed Flavor 4 PC.

Oh yeah, I also dose my PC prongs (and other things like IEC prongs, RCAs and RCA plugs, speaker cables, etc) with Walker SST. I strongly recommend using this product, albeit very carefully and according to the manufacturer's instructions, when testing out new gear; I feel it allows you to hear much more of what the gear will bring to your system.

YMMV.

i am using a 12 AWG Signal magic power digital reference powercord on my Symphonic Line Vibrato cd player and 10 AWG Signal magic powercords on my Tempest preamp and both of my Extreme monos. all of the powercords are extremely well built products.on the other hand for cables that carry the audio signal i prefer the Groneberg TS premium ic cables over any other cable that i have listened to and in fact i just asked Klaus to build me a 10' pair of TS premium loudspeaker cables as well to feed the audio signal to my new Loreleis. these cables are simply amazing!

Hi guys,

I wonder if i could get the gronenburg power cords fitted with australian standard plugs.  I can't figure why different countries use different types of power plugs.

I'm also using the 12 AWG Signal magic power digital reference powercord on my Jolida JD-100 sweet! I can't wait for Klaus to get back so he can start my conversion to Extreme monos !!!

recsq,

I too have a JD-100, albeit with a VH Audio cryoed Flavor 2 PC. I'm also running the Extreme Monos. IMHO, I think you're in for a treat when you move to the Extremes...the Jolida provides some toe tappin' fun.

Heh, good old Volex.  I use these too with upgraded ends for years.

Good old AA! Never did a shootout with them.  Anyone else?
