SB2 mod updates

I have been trying out a few new things with the SB2 mods.

I will now be replacing the stock DAC chip with the KE version.

This is in the analog only and full mod versions.

For the Full and Digital only versions, I will be rerouting the power to the digital buffer chip. Currently it comes off the main 3.3 volt switching supply. I will be running it from a linear regulated supply.

I have built a digital only version with a digital isolation transformer. It is still breaking in. This will be offered as an option shortly.

Most of these SB2s will be at the Bolder Cable get together at mgalusha's next Saturday night. Please plan to stop by to take a listen if you are coming out to RMAF.

Finally, the folks who host my website have decided to get out of the business. My site is being migrated to another hosting company. The new host takes over on October 1.

I will try to get all orders pending shipped this week. If I cannot, I will be in touch with you about re-entering your order on the new site. The order database is NOT being migrated. I am sure there will be some bugs, but I hope it won't be too inconvient.

Wayne,

What happened to the SB2 power supply?  I don't see it on your site.

All the SB2s sent to me for mods since Sept 25 get the updates.

I have pulled the power supply off the website for a short period of time. My web hosting finally is changing over this weekend. I can get all pending orders out by then. Any new orders will have to wait for the new host and portal to be up and working.

I won't have any more power supplies built until next week at the earliest. They are proving to take a lot more time to build than I had budgeted. The price on the power supply will have to go up in order to pay for all the labor involved.

I have modded a Hosfelt PS and will test that out a bit today. If it sounds better than it did stock, this may be a viable alternative to the scratch built supply. It will be less expensive to mod an existing supply and it will be a lot faster than building from scratch.

The modded Hosfelt does sound better than the stock. It is stil not quite up to the PS I make. That may change with time.

I just tried it out for a short while. It wasn't as dark or slow as the stock version had been. It did add quite a bit of sibilance that the PS I build does not have. This may be because of the new caps and rectifiers and it may mellow out with time on it.

The biggest negative about it was an amazing amount of hum from the transformer. It didn't matter whichway it was plugged into the wall.

I may order in a couple of these to try out long term. The one I had belonged to a customer and it was shipped back today.
