Very nice projector.  Though is native 4:3 and if you are wanting to use in a home theater setting you will need to factor in the additional costs for an anamorphic(sp?) lens.  Which in my eyes puts you the "more than you would need to spend" catagory.

A lot of good information on avsforum.com.

If I was in the market for a new projector I would wait a few months until the newer LCD's(Panny 900, Sanyo Z4, Epson 500) come to street and see what their prices may bring.  Which in return may push the nicer high definition DLP's down in price.

Jeff

Frank - Thanks for the link - that is a great site!  With the help of Projector Central, and AVS Science, I purchased a JVC SX21 last year, which I am extremely pleased with.  Now all of my friends wants HT setups, but at a lower cost.  So I am helping a friend build a HT, and the PJ is the hardest part.  Projector Central gives the HT1100 very good reviews, and the price is certainly right (MSRP of $1999).

LD - You bring up a good point - this PJ is 4:3.  However, when I gave my friend the choice of 16:9 or 4:3, he chose 4:3.   I have a 4:3 PJ, which I am very pleased with.  The biggest drawback for me is that the screen is so tall in my basement (7.5' ceiling) that there is little room to mount a centeral channel speaker.

As for the anamorphic lense -that is a factory option from NEC, but certainly is not a requirement to have.

Anyone have any strong arguments on the topic of 16:9 vs. 4:3?

I find it absolutely pointless to have 4:3 unless you are a die-hard fan of old black and white movies.

Definitely going with a wide screen, so the HT1100 is out of the running (although it is a great value).  I would consider it with the anamorphic lense ($200 option), but I don't think that is a good idea for a novice.  I am looking for a simple, turn key system.

Budget always plays a role, and not sure what yours is but in the $1k range I would look at:

Optoma H27, Optoma H31, Infocus 4805, Sharp DT300

$2k:

Panny 700, Sanyo Z3

$3k:

Panny 900, Sanyo Z4, Hitachi 3000, Infocus 7205, Banq 7700/8700, Optoma H77, Epson 550, Toshiba 700

"I" personally do not see(no pun intended) the benefits with paying much more than $3,000 for a projector.  While others may disagree, I feel there is a dimishing cost of return.

One that is pretty slick is the Optoma Movie Time - $1500 but an all-in-one solution.

Jeff

Thanks for the excellent list.  I will take a close look at each of those.
