I figured it would not be best to clutter up the forum with good deals, so here is one thread for them.

What I have:
Hitachi 250GB for $90 shipped
Buy.com is selling them for $100 but there is a 10% off coupon that can be found on fatwallet here:
http://www.fatwallet.com/t/18/520812

The coupon has a maximum value of $15 so I bought two 250GB drives for $190 shipped

$190/500GB = $0.38/GB

Dang... NOW you tell me.. ;)

I just recently bought a Seagate at what I thought was a great deal... But I threw away $50... I (accidentally) threw out the hard drive box with the UPC code so I couldn't get the rebate...     I was going to have paid $80 for a 250G Seagate... but instead it was 130.

So, this is great that you don't have to deal with a rebate!

How does this one look?  I know nothing about the dimensions along which HDD specifications may vary - but I'd be looking to use this to store music for a SB2.

Any recommendations for enclosures?  Am I better off withor without a fan?

Seagate drives are generally considered very good drives.  The Barracuda line (which I think this is) are amongst the quietest of drives.  TigerDirect says the drive has a 5 year warranty, which is odd for an OEM part but very good if true.

And if the rebate is not an issue to you, the drive is probably a bargain.

I'd be really, really, REALLY leary of Tigerdirect and rebates.  They have a horrible reputation.

It looks like this is an OEM drive too, which means no cables, etc. and maybe a shorter warranty.

Seagate OEM drives...

I just bought a Seagate 300 meg drive while they were  on sale at Outpost.com for $99.95 after a $50 rebate. The previous poster is correct that OEM doesn't come with cables. Mine was retail so it did come with a cable but I didn't need it since this is a 2nd drive in my PC dedicated to music. Warranties are the same, OEM or retail, and the longest in the industry at 5 years. The drive is very quiet, quick and runs cool. Highly recommended!

I hate Tiger Direct.  I bought my parents a computer there this Christmas, and I just recently got all my rebate money.  Never again will I buy from there.

Two worst computer companies I've ever dealt with: Tiger Direct and Monarch Computer. Tiger does bait and switch. Monarch... you really have to yank my chain to get written up on my private website. Here's what I have to say about Monarch.

I recently ordered 4 pairs of headphones through Tiger direct. They indicated at the time of purchase that they were in stock. At first they offered me a refund of shipping charges because they were going to be delayed with shipping, then after one month send me a notice saying the manufacturer notified them that the product was discontinued and they would refund the payment I had made a month before plus give me a $25 "in house Tiger credit" They have been reasonable but I don't like the fact that I lost a month on a hot selling product (they are now hard to find) based on them saying what was in stock was not in stock.

I know a lot of business is done this way - there IS no stock - an order from you generates an order from them to their supplier, and if everything works perfectly there is a reasonable delay, I even know of one case where a big advertising campaign for a new CD release had (paid) orders coming in well before the CD was even manufactured. The only way the customer might know was that it took 5 weeks to receive the CD!

Tiger Direct is incredibly slow to ship, even on items listed 'in stock'

Newegg is a very reliable place to buy from - great customer service and really good prices.

ScottMayo,
I just read your link and it is hysterical. In monarch's defence, I would have written the same thing. It's unfortunate that the email was sent to you and not the original salesman but the original salesman should have known without having to go to a higher up. The profit margin in computers is not high enough to risk negative feedback-which is much more damaging than positive feedback is rewarding. The follow up email is also definitely a mistake (enough to get fired for in most businesses) but I appreciate the spirit it was offered in. That guy has balls (and yes, he was probably drunk).

I work right around the corner from the 'TigerDirect.com' retail store.  I'd rather order from Newegg any day.  I only go there when I need to see it or buy it sooner rather than later.

I've learned that external drives are probably the way to go when importing music.

What do you folks suggest as to which type of HD to purchase, aside from capacity.

Firewire ?
USB 2.0 ?
ethernet ?
SATA?
D2?

does it matter what rpm speed?
