Side ported speakers???? What are the drawbacks?
« on: 31 Aug 2005, 05:49 pm »
I have a friend who can't have rear ported speakers as they need to sit near the front wall.

I understand some of the drawbacks of front ported speakers.

I know some of the pro's and cons of bottom ported speakers.

What are the pro's and con's of side ported speakers?

Are you sure he can't have rear ported speakers?  My Linn 5140s are ported in the front (bass) and in the rear (mids/tweets) and operate fine right next to the wall.

Nope, I'm not sure about not being able to use them...those sound interesting.

As far as drawbacks to side porting, I would imagine phase might be a problem at the port frequency.

The Linns are interesting, as the rear bass driver fires backwards but the port is in the front, while the mid and tweeter fire forwards but the port is in the back.  Hmmm...I searched for side ported speakers on Google, but can't find much if any discussion of the pros and cons of such a design.

Why not a top-ported speaker?

Good question...my guess is dust, kids crayons and spilled beer might get in...

My subwoofers are top ported with a screen over the ports.....

Ha! I didn't think of the practical reasons... But hey, maybe it could be a beer-holder/port tuning device... ;)
