Skipping NAD Cd player

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum, but here goes...

I have a NAD C541 cd player that has started randomly skipping on just about every cd I put in it.  Doesn't matter if it's new, old, cd-r, scratched, pristine...

I've modded the power supply and signal path and have the service manual/schematic, so I'm not averse to opening it up, but I'm not exactly sure where to start (or even if I need any special test equipment to service the transport...)  Does anyone have any hints or direction?  Anything would be greatly appreciated  :D

(Oh, BTW, this problem has come up months after my modding, so I don't think they're related.  8) )

I too have had problems with my NAD CD player skipping and stopping.  It will not play the higher number tracks.  It helps to clean and lube the rails that the laser rides on.  Also make sure the lens is clean.  The problem keeps returning though.  Some day I will replace the laser mechanism if I can find the correct part.

Try replacing the laser pickup.  See who the mfg of the transport mechanism is and look for a part number on the pickup.  Do a google search to find one.  I did this repair on a Sony transport in my Talk Thunder a few months ago.  It fixed skipping and not reading some CD's.

Thank you folks!

I'm gonna' try the lens cleaning suggestion first.  I've heard of people having problems with the NAD players and skipping.  This is the first real problem I've had, and it seemed to go from barely perceptible to annoying to a REAL PROBLEM in a short time.  Never cleaned the lens before...

My NAD 504 was skipping a lot at the beginning of each CD. Lens cleaning didn't help, so I took the cover off and looked inside. I found that some of the silicone grease used for lube had hardened up on the laser assembly's plastic gear teeth. I cleaned it off and no more skipping.

Thanks for your tips, folks!

I tried the lens cleaning route, and it took care of all the problems.  Who knew?  :o
