Has anyone done this before?  I've got a pair of black paradigm monitor 7's that I'd really love to stain to something around a walnut finish - I assume it would be just like restaining anything else, but wanted to get others' opinions.

I'm not familiar with those speakers per say but I'd guess that unless it has a real wood veneer, (which I doubt since they are black) you won't be able to do what you want without a heck of a lot of work.  Stripping the black finish then applying a walnut stain to MDF probably won't be very satisfying to look at.

Like said already, I think you best bet would be to strip the vinyl/veneer off and then reapply a new walnut veneer for which you can stain to liking.  

Even if the veneer on the Paradigms was real wood, stain usually goes all the way through the veneer so it cannot be sanded off to restain. You must strip off the old and put on a new veneer to get the appropriate affect.
