What is your Wish List?
« on: 19 Aug 2005, 01:16 am »
I am developing a real itch to spend money on hardware. I have been fairly restrained in my spending lately, and I am in the mood to get some new things (not all audio)...

I now have the cell phone I have been waiting for (After I fried my Treo 600): The Sprint (Audiovox) PPC-660 Pocket PC
128MB of memory
400MHz processor
slide-out QWERTY keyboard
Bluetooth
SDIO expansion card slot
VGA quality digital camera/camcorder

I want:

- dual Subs probably VMPS larger
its time for the low end

-IRD PT-3
dooin it right with the norh 9s

-IRD Purist PreAmp
 time for an upgrade

-IRD Purist Preamp
for the bedroom or HT system

-A new PC
latest and greatest (I a have a dual Pentium 3 and other p3's and P-2s)

-XBox 360
 you're forced to

-Some way to have good quality audio on the deck
 I have the Outlaw

A great DVR
 is there aything out there?

...and one of these http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000400055006

I wouldn't mind getting new rears & rear centers (M&K SS-150's).

I do want a new receiver (Pioneer Elite VSX-59TXi to replace my Elite VSX-39TX).

Maybe R-DES for the subs.

And I suppose if I did all of that I could upgrade my front array (go to M&K S-150's from the S-125's I've got now)

Other than the receiver upgrade & R-DES, I don't really need to do much else as I'm pretty happy with how things are.

Easy. Wake up tomorrow and all my CDs are copied and FLACed onto a networked RAID and backed up.

Finding the ZU Definitions in my living room wouldn't be too bad either.

Try Humbolt County, it's about the only area left that is still semi affordable, but don't let others know I want to be able to retire there  8)

My wish list: the understanding of exactly how acoustics affects sound (e.g., What use is diffusion in a HT? If it's useful, where does it have to be placed? Can there be too much low frequency absorption? How do sound measurement systems truly work?  What are the detriments of using such systems?), and the understanding of exactly how the TACT system works (such that I could understand the benefits and detriments of such a system).

Bar none, at this point in time, I think this is the only piece that will make a major improvement of sound in my system.  While many go on in their games trying to tweak the sounds of their cabling and amplification, the most significant increase begins with the source.

Man, only if I had $10K in my pockets right now.

     :rotflmao:

I just need TIME.  Time to finish the system I set out to build some 6 months ago for which I have fully acquired all the pieces.  I don't need any more components or drivers, I just need to make it happen.

Ultimate cost-no-object that I've actually heard:

    Avantgarde Trio Classico
    VIVA Aurora monoblock amplifiers
    VIVA Linea 300 pre-amp
    Clearaudio Solution w/ Graham Phantom

    Reality-based, coming soon hopefully ;^)

    AVA 550EXR amplifier
Clearaudio Champion Level 1 w/ Graham Robin

VAC Standard preamp, Magnepan 1.6, and Jolida JD100 already in place, and are my "keepers" for the foreseeable future.

I'm not sure if you know but there is a great book called The Master Handbook of Acoustics. It's a bit long (almost 600 pages) but it's a fairly easy read. It explains in excruciating detail nearly everything you would want to know.

    This is what the table of contents looks like;
      Fundementals of Sound
      Sound Levels and the Decibel
The Ear and the Perception of Sound
Sound Waves in the Free Field
      Speech, Music and Noise
      Analog and Digital Processing
      Reverberation
      Control of Interfering Noise
      Asporption of Sound
      Reflection of Sound
      Defraction of Sound
      Refraction of Sound
      Diffusion of Sound
      The Schroeder Diffuser
      Modal Resonances in Closed Spaces
      Reflections in Enclosed Spaces
      Comb Filter Effects
      Quiet Air for the Studio
      Acoustics of the Listening Room
Acoustics of the Small Recording Studio
      Acoustics of the Control Room
      Acoustics for Multri Track Recording
A/V Tech Room and Voice Over Recording
      Adjustable Acoustics
      Acoustical Distortion
      Room Acoustics Measurement Software
      Room Optimizer
      Desktop Aurlization
(my fingers hurt after that one)[/list:u]

      Amazon has it for $26.

For me, it was some of the best money I've spent to date. It won't make you an expert but it sure answers tons of lingering questions about our hobby (or at least it did for me).
