I have a 1" tear on my tweeter.  I am not sure how it happened.  There is about 1" tear on the outside driver yet it works fine.  How come I don't hear any distortion?

1" tear on the lower left.

A replacement is on the way just for the peace of mind.

Levi, that looks like someone pushed something from the outer edges and towards the tweeter.  I suspect foul play in here.  You sure it was not one of the boys?

It does not seem to look like a "usage tear" and I have never heard of a tweeter dome extending so much to produce a tear.  Even a woofer surround tear is usually very subtle and does NOT produce physical changes like that.  Need a grill or something there.

Levi,

That's suck man! :( I wonder how that happen? Well, as long as you can still get replacment than it should be fine. Now, do you know that Sonus matched thier tweeters? If so I think you might need to get a matched pair. But, don't go crazy over it you won't be able to tell anyway.

Good thing that I have horn tweeter and I can't poke my finger in it

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

Maybe it is time to put some sturdy grills on the speakers until temptation is out of someone's fingers
Any leeds or suspects to the crime?

I suspect it was very low bass notes from the Talk Thunder that ripped the tweeter. :D

Hi Levi,

That definitely looks like damage which has been caused by an outside influence.

I remember my son was angry with me a few years ago and pushed in the dust covers of my focal mid/bass drivers.

Good luck.  How much will it cost to replace?

Regards

It's funny, everyone in the family are suspects except myself

I ordered a replacement from Sumiko Audio which sets me back $160 each including shipping.

Madisound can find out if it is Vifa or Seas making and would probably 50% cheaper.  It is amazing that I did NOT noticed any distortion.  Hmmm...

The replacement tweeter arrived.  I can now disassemble the tweeter and make a great paper weight out of it.

    Magnet structure and inverted dome

Voice coil exposed.  Interestingly, that is there all to it.  Amazing.
