I am going to purchase a new player this fall and I am strongly considering this unit. I am also thinking I could eliminate my outboard DAC with this unit. I know it has more than I need for 2-channel playback, but I want a universal player that will last for a while.  The specs and few reviews are very good

Vanns has a very good price on the 1000, hard to turn down.

Other considerations:
Denon 2900?
Modified denon product?
McIntosh MVP-861? Expensive!
Any thoughts? Any problems with the Onkyo?

I have a modified (modWright) Denon 2900. I like it. It's not dirt cheap, but the sound is clear, about the equal of the DAC in the Bryston SP1.7. I didn't hear the unit before the mods so I can't definitely say the mod did glorious things, but based on my experience with Denon I'd say it was probably a good investment.

The one caveat is that recently, the unit has been finicky about spinning up SACDs. But mine's been in a dusty environment, and might just need a good cleaning.

I have had this wonderful player for about 3 days now and this SP-1000 is one of the most coolest pieces of audio equipment I have ever purchased! So far I am most impressed by the simplicity of operation, the extremely solid constuction, play's everything I have thrown at it so far with percise play back with beautiful sound and picture, and so far worth every single penny! I wish our weather would turn to fall over night to keep me from wanting to go outside so I can play with it more often. It will come!
If any of you are considering this "machine" do not hesitate! BUY IT NOW!!!!.

Apparently their are not to many people who own this machine. I have had this unit for about 2 weeks now and I thought I would share some more impressions.
This is one fine piece of audio equipment. I have been able to disregard my DAC which I never thought I would do.
I have not had ANY problems at all. Plays everything with precision. The sound, (2-channel only) is out of this world. I have often thought, how much better can my system get? Well again, leaps and bounds over what I had before.

Here is one nice feature of many, I can shut down all the video circuits when just playing audio. Nice!

The sound seams to be so precise that I now seem to hear the ever so slight difference in height of where they placed the instrument, the very faint worble of someones voice after holding a note for a long time and running out of breath, all the clicking noises of sound gates in the mixing process,and wind instruments, and the list goes on. This unit plays detail I have never heard before.

You know what they say, "It is only as good as your weakest link" How true!

Again, if you are considering a new source unit, check this unit out! it is worth it. and comes with a 1 year in house labor and materials warranty! SWEET!

A competing theory, from the Linn/Naim world, is that the closer a component is to the source, the more bang you will get from an upgrade to that component (I think this theory assumes reasonable and compatible equipment across the board).  Your results tend to support the Linn/Naim theory (not that it disproves the weakest link theory).  My experiences have also been similar as the results from updrades to CDP,  PreAmp, and ICs were simply amazing.

Theres a good reason this player was rated over the DV-50 and even with the Merdian g-98 but considered the real star of the group in Oct 04 issue of What Hifi.

I never owned anything Onkyo before this and was/am amazed at the build quality,sound quality on all formats being so musical and yet still so detailed without coming off as digital sounding.

It also has a very nice and well laid out aluminum clad remote and a superior picture over the Denon 5900 and 3910 to boot.

Even when I buy into hi res dvd....I will be keeping this player for audio for quite some time.
Its my beleif that even without the stellar picture....the SP1000 is a bargain even at list price for just audio.

I honestly have a hard time imagining my audio sounding better than it does on my Onkyo 1000, whether it be 2 channel or multichannel source material.

I purchased mine last November when Vanns was having this crazy sale on it for $1447.

What a steal. I know that's not chump change by any means, and I don't say it lightly, but I got the Onkyo 1000 for a STEAL at that kind of price.

Truly a dream come true since day one.

Vanns is where I purchased mine and it is still as Q said, a steal" at $1499 with free shipping and no tax!  
I cannot say enough of how I feel about this player. Like I have said here and other places, It has brought my WHOLE system up several notches on the hi-fi quality scale.
A real joy to play with, look at and listen too.

I have a question about the Onkyo SP1000.  Let's say you hook it up via analog outs to a multichannel preamp.  Is there a setting on the SP1000 that will output "5-channel stereo", so that when you play a regular redbook CD it will output signal to all 5 speaker channels?

I know someone who is setting up a system for a space that is used on occassion for social events.  In those cases, he wants to fill the room with music, and instead of relying on multi-channel recordings, he would simply like the option of playing a CD and have music come from all of his speaker.  Actually, his ideal for this situation would be to have "5-channel mono", but "5-channel stereo" is a fairly common option on AV receivers, so I thought I'd ask for that first...
