Interesting. I recall reading about the Berning impedance conversion scheme several years ago, but had lost track of how it's been applied. He is achieving peak power at 8ohms, which is unusual for an OTL, so it looks like the Definition should load the amp to deliver nominally around 5.5 watts.
I sold some of the first Berning preamps back in the mid-70s, (TF-10 if I recall?) and once owned one of his early power amps. Berning designs then had an unusually "objective" sound character in an era of tube gear that was often euphonic. The Marantz 7c/8b aficionados didn't think Berning electronics sounded like tube gear at all. I always thought from the sound results obtained, Berning and Tim deParavicini were achieving the most similar sound characteristics through entirely different means. You could hear the similarities in tube objectivity between deP's Luxman M3045B triode push-pull 8045G amps and the first generation of Berning preamps and amps. If that lineage of results is continued by the Seigfried, then it could deliver Audiopax-like speed, purity and transparency in a much lower power configuration.
