Some of the best sounding speakers in the last 25 years ?

> ''I'm not connected with this company in any way'' I'm looking for new speakers and wanted to get some feedback on these LSA speakers and other speakers.........

I didn't read your posts at aa as asking for information. You put the post in a context of the best speakers in the past 25 years. Only later did you mention, after questions, that you never heard them. (I mean, what else could you say? Nobody in the public has heard them.)

Unheard speakers don't belong in threads about classic speakers.

Now, there is plenty of room for disingenuous and/or misinformed BS on the net, but there's plenty or folks who are going to call you on it. Live by the BS, die by the anti BS.

And the marketing of those DK integrateds remains creepy, imo. I want nothing to do with those individuals.

Hope this is clear enough for you to understand.

Below is my "short list" of some of the most amazing sounding speakers I've heard made in the last 25 years (in random order) .

- Waveform Mach 17
- Dunlavy V
- Duntech Sovereign
- Apogee Diva
- Apogee Stage
- Quad EL- 63
- Infinity IRS V
- Joseph Audio Pearl
- Fulton Premier
- Von Schweikert VR9SE

All of these speakers listed above gave me new insights into what loudspeakers in the "cost no object" camp were capable of doing sonically(a few of these just "blew me away" when I heard them for the first time) .

Of particular note on my listing: I did NOT include any Avalon, B&W, Dynaudio, Sonus Faber, Revel or Wilson speakers in this list whatsoever!  :o ALL have let me down sonically when I heard them! (they are just not that "special" or unique in my book).  Currently I am down to a handfull of speakers which I am still longing to hear such as the Magnepan 20.1, Inner Sound's and Rockport's top model.

Well, I've listened to tons of speakers in the last 25 years...no speaker has been perfect but many would have made me MORE than happy to own.

I guess the ones that did the most things right to my taste and ear have been the Apogee line of speakers. While none of them sound the same...all that I had a chance to hear were best of class in their price range...even new.

I own at this time two pair: Duetta Signatures and Centaur Minors. Both are a steal used and beat even new speakers I listen to at what was their new price.

Of course I am lucky enough to be able to drive and setup these speakers in my large room so as to bring out their best. Every speaker has it's needs to sound it's best...

The Apogee Stage, Diva, Scintilla, full range, Grands...ect, all rate very high in the best of the last 25 years I would think...I have never had a chance to hear the Scintilla, fullrange, or Grands

My two cents worth

I am very impressed with the B&W 801 Series II loudspeakers with our crossover fix.  Actually I am amazed at how much they have responded to improvements in our electronics over the years.  Recently compared them to a new set of B&W 800Ds on our electronics, and although the 800Ds did exhibit even better transparency and image solidity (wonder how much was because the 800Ds are nearly 200 pounds each heavier), the 801s still have a better bass reach and transparency and there was nothing there to make me want to part with $20,000 for a new set of speakers.

Funny how we came by this set of 801s.  Years ago a guy brought them out bouncing around loose in the back of a pickup truck for repair.  The looked like they had been stored in a room being repainted (covered with white wallboard dust and more - really nifty on a black finish).  One blown woofer, two blown tweeters, one blown midrange, one mangled woofer grill, fix the B&W crossover blunder, and needed lots of work to clean up, but still a repair bill within reason.  The guy never picked them up or paid for the repairs.  Even ignored registered letters to him.  Geeze.

They have been working fine here ever since and we use them to evaluate what the much smaller Biro L/1s can't do (namely bass reach and absolute power handling).

....sounded great with pop, rock, jazz, and classical . But they are very exposing of poorer components in the system. They are a full range speaker with powered subwoofers carrying the bottom end, I guess down to 20 hz. The tweeter and mid range are extremely efficient at around 100 db instead of the more average efficiency of around 88db or so .They require a very low noise(preferrably set tube amp)especially with the first watt or two of power .
They only need a few watts of power to blast off so massive power amps aren't needed.
They are way beyond my price range or I would buy them. They are not for small or shallow rooms  as you need to get atleast several feet away from them to maximize their sound field. I listen to them on rare occassion up at audio emporium in mequon WI just to treat myself its kind of an emotional experience.

Early in the 1980's came the Dayton Wright XAM-4 Loudspeakers built like an egg shell (very fragile) and a true audiophile product, (read that as an excercise in line transmission theory) with various potential ways to hook it up.

The sound was (and still is) impressive. The soundstage was very wide extending way beyond the speakers. You just, (particularly in the 1980's) never heard anything quite like it Any shortcomings were offset by some spectacular results in another area that grabbed your attention.

An oddity to be sure and one that "shouldn't have worked" but did. Although I moved on they still remain a fond memory. Listners, dealers and true audiophiles were always impressed.

Here is my list:

I loved the KEF 104/2 as well, had an unmatched B stock pair from 88 until 94 when I traded them for a pair of Signet book shelf units (WAF!)

Best midrange/you-are-thereness: Quad ESL original. Nothing I have heard really comes close. The Rethms have most of the presense but lack that enveloping smoothness of the Quad  which just makes voices sound REAL.

Best imaging:  Spica TC 50. Just an incredible sonic hologram.

Best impact/snap/transient respnse: Klipschhorns.  Drums on most other speakers sound wrong, plain and simple.

Best low end: Tough one, but I would say the Vandy 5. Low and fast.

Too bad I can't find a speaker that does all these things well.  I would say the Rethms suit my  taste overall more than any other speaker around today. I am going to build a pair of Hammer Dynamics in the next year and they are billed as a Quad ESL with a matching top and bottom, so we will see.

Thanks,
Rob

LOL--I was thinking about my answer and two speakers came to mind.  Avant Garde Duos and Vandy 5As.  Geez I wish I wouldn't have read this whole thread.  I couldn't pick between these two incredible speakers then and I can't do it now.  All I know this that I'd give either of my testicles for one of the pairs.

The best I've ever heard is a near-tie between Dali Megalines, driven by big Krell amps, and VMPS RM/x. The RM/x image better and add no artifical warmth. The Megalines... well, at $40,000 and with that number of drivers, they do impress with their ability to handle just about anything thrown at them. If you live in a palace and need to fill your biggest hall with sound, they are probably the way to go.

I still have my Infinity QLS-1's. They were my favorites for almost 2 decades, and I still keep them on surround duty. They have a interesting warm flavor to them.

(Standard caveat: I resell VMPS, and own a pair of RM/x.)

If you're talking about for the money, the little Vandie 2ce with Melos electronics and two Vandie subs at a NY show years ago was one of the most enjoyable equipment listening experiences I've ever had. Out of the way room and great software were key.

Other than that, I've heard so many speakers, but the ones that for one reason or another - usually going well beyond just the playback of the equipment - really stand out emotionally:

Divas with Bloom's vinyl in New York. The original Dahlquists the first time I heard them in MN. The Magneplanar Tympanis the first time I heard them, in my small hometown, of all places. Dave Wilson demoing the original Puppies in a small room with his own recordings. Those Jadis Eurythmie (?) horns were a trip and very easeful on simple material....

It's odd that I almost never respond this way to large, furniture boxes with many dynamic drivers in them....

Really stunning review! Makes me wonder if the reviewer was given a "Happy Ending" after his tour of the DK manufacturing facility.

At least the reviewer admits upfront DK totally funded the review. So some things can be taken with a grain of salt.

If you want to 'market' these speakers, there's a 'Market Square'.

Yeah, and for anyone late to the topic, DK is the slimey company, imo, that has an avalanche of its integrated amps getting dumped on audiogon.

Why anyone would keep posting links about the DK speakers in a thread about the best speakers in the last 25 years is beyond me when you consider:

1. The poster can't claim to have even heard the speakers he's posting repeatedly about.
2. They aren't (or at least weren't at the start of all this) even on the market.

Merely obtuse or obtuse shill? Does it matter?

Where is the moderator for this forum?  The obvert nature of linking a commercial interest for products(in this case, speakers) that NO one except the designer and his interested, associated parties have ever heard of, to a thread about classic, timeless products, is incendiary and out of line.

Can someone tell this person to take his commercials to a different thread?

PS:  what is sad about Dk and their infamous integrated is that it was reviewed favorably by a webzine that I used to trust to provide unbiased and clear reviews of audio products.  So sad that it was named a "Reviewer's Choice" just to have it dumped in droves to Audiogon. Really, really sad.

Well, I am a facilitator on this circle.  'Soundideas' started this thread.  He got a little flack for shilling and then said he wasn't associated with DK.   Then a nice thread about classic speakers developed.  He posted the thread about the reviews so, I gave him another rub for fun... and to let him know it's pretty obvious he's marketing for DK.

So, I feel I've done my job.  No reason to hack up a thread that's going fine otherwise.  Seems like you could just skip the very few irrelevant posts and enjoy this topic otherwise.

-C

PS I don't understand your comments about DK Integrateds.  I have one and like it A LOT.  However I'm selling it to fund some new TacT gear because I can't live without room correction.  Otherwise, it's top-notch gear.
