Has anybody heard RBH speakers?
« on: 31 Jul 2005, 06:04 pm »
I have a friend who is interested in their top of the line speakers and he was asking me about them.  I have never heard them, but read a few nice reviews over at audioholics.com:

Any comments or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

If there is anybody in the tri-state area who has a pair that they would be willing to demo that would be even better.

Thanks,

George

I have one of their 1010SE Sub's with external 400w amp here right now for an audition.  Pretty impressive build quality and sounds terrific.  Hard to believe anyone would be unhappy with this caliber of product.

I haven't heard the full T2s, but I use a pair of 1010 SEN subs (which is the bottom half of the T2). They're really quite good. Extended and clean (though I cheat by using a Tact).

I previously had the VBT Magellan 8s, which were also quite good, but weren't as robust and didn't move as much air. The (very) slight loss in detail with the RBH was more than made up for by increased oomph, especially when upping the crossover frequency.

RBH doesn't seem to be known much by audiophiles. They're more popular with high-end custom AV installs, though, and seem to be really well priced. I'd also like to hear what they can do full range. There's a nice review of their smaller HT system by Fremer over at Ultimate AV.

I donot know about the T2 system but I had a pair 661 floor standing and they sound harsh on the treble and hard overall. Even Spica TC-50 in my second room sounds much better in quality. Audition is the best way for you to judge the sound.

I had a pair of their RBH 61se monitors for about two years.
It was in the $7-900 competition range of monitors I think.
Had excellent build quality and a decent overall sound for two channel/HT.
I would say that if I was looking for 2 channel sound only, RBH would not be at the top of my list, but they do get good rviews from HT reviewers.

I do still have their center speaker RBH 661 which is very good.

Here is review of the speakers I had:

I have listened to the T2's at the RBH factory as well as a local audio buddy's house. They are very impressive.  I would not classify them as harsh by any means.  Very smooth yet detailed too. They don't do it for me as I prefer monitors or speakers that disappear completely.  These don't.

However they do provide a large, impressive and dynamic sound that is plenty of fun to listen to and certainly make fantastic speakers for HT.

PROS:
-Deep, tuneful bass.
-Large sound is great for HT and is fun for any big music (orchestral and rock alike).
-Smooth, detailed sound but never in your face.  They have tamed the ringing of the metal midrange drivers well so the midrange is quite enjoyable.
-Very handsome finishes.  My friend has the fancy wood grain finish and RBH has their piano black finish on display at the factory.  The piano black finish is actually done in Japan at the Yamaha piano factory. So if you have seen a piano black Yamaha piano, you'll already know how beautiful these are in black.

CONS:
-Large, heavy speakers so they are visually intrussive.  Low WAF.
-Hard to move and setup in just the right spot.
-Don't disappear sonically.  You still know where the sound is coming from.  Probably due to the large baffle surface area.

This is the pair my audiophile friend has.  He lives by the RBH factory and bought the pair they used for the photographs on the website.  I think he got a very, very good deal on them too.

George,
Your friend might also like to know RBH makes a highend speaker line as well, Status Acoustics.  I've never heard them but the reviews are excellent.

This funky looking semi line array type speaker actually has 3 10" woofers at the base of the tower and if I remember correctly 3 on the back too(which might have been passive radiators though).

I saw these in the prototype phase back when I was at the RBH factory. They were just testing them and tuning the xover points.

The cabinets are made from CNC machined layers of MDF and other materials. I think the facia might be made of corian but they hadn't decided what to use just yet at that point in time.

I didn't get to hear them so I can't comment on how they sound.  Certainly a wild design with that array of tweeters, woofers and triplet subs at the bottom.

I think Roger was saying these would retail for around $75,000 or so.
