Although I am 41, I started listening to records at 10, I did not get my own system till I was 14. I worked a summer job and with some matching funds from my father spent about $600 on it back in 1978. I remember getting the bug early and used to hang out after school at the hifi shop in the neighberhood demo'ing to all kinds of stuff. Then my fathers very good friend who was an audiophile patiently took me under his wing and taught me more about hifi. I remember listening to his GAS Ampzilla/Micro-seiki turntable/B&W 800's(?) and getting blown-away. I ended up with Crown IC/DC 150 pre/amp at 16 with Ohm H's. When I went off to boarding school, I was well known for my obsession.
Nowadays, I guess the younger generations are more about access and convenience. Not caring about quality and how to listen. My 9 year old daughter is the exception. While her friends are rocking ipods/portable cd players, she can appreciate good sound and has a pretty good ear. She refuses to listen to my Parasound belt-drive cdp2000 without the Ack! dac.  :D  She says the voices are so much more natural on the Ack!
I just introduced her to vinyl last month and already see her eyes getting the size of quarters  when I spin vinyl, as she has her sights set on my green P3....

What happend to all the young audiophiles? I have noticed that with 22 i am pretty much the youngest audiophile i have seen anywhere. Anyone else my age here or do you almost so young guys know where they went?  8)

-Flo

Pretty trick system you got there at age  22

At 22 my "high end" setup were M&K S1B satellites and V1B subwoofers with an LP-1S crossover, with the satellites driven with a monster JVC receiver.  Sources were a Nakamichi Dragon cassette deck and a Denon CD player, plus the receiver's tuner of course.  It was a pretty sweet college system and I remember many nights enjoying it with good company, undoubtedly there were other nights good and bad I don't remember too well  :smoke:

Shortly thereafter I heard the Divas.  Other speakers came and went in the meantime, but six years (it wasn't easy saving money while in medical school, but I finally starting making some dough in residency) later I had the Divas & DAX3, along with a Velodyne ULD18-II that was later replaced with a pair of Muse18 subs.

It took until earlier this year, at the ripe old age of 36, and a lot of money to finally surpass that system.

Florian, I can't wait to see what you will be listening to in 16 years !!!

I'm 24, i'm not an audiophile, but i started getting into hifi stuff when i was 16 because a family friend told me that my father's system sucked.  I got irked by that and thought "oh yeah, one day i'm going to get a better system than yours" (so much for maturity!!!).  Back then i was drooling at Magnepan SMGc's and thought that they were "pimp".  Back then, i thought i'd run it through my pioneer elite receiver and it'd sound good.  I found out rather quickly that the pioneer wouldn't be sufficient for it, so i started reading stuff at audioreview.com about speakers and integrated amplifiers.  A few years later, i bought a HK integrated amplifier, my first taste of decent music.  Then i read some more, then some more, and about half a year ago, i read about tripath stuff over here on AC, picked up a teac, a preamp (tubed), a samsung 841, and a set of droolworthy Magnepans.  I attribute a lot of my setup to our resident genius Vinnie Rossi.  Anyway, here i am, with a sweet setup (sans broken preamp) and enjoying every second of it.

I'm 22!

Its hard to be an audiophile much younger unless you have your parents money to spend.  That said i was probably an audiophile at 15, well a wannabe, with garage sale bargains and then DIY once I educated myself a little with the internet.

Being a teenager makes you more likely to be stuck with bose or some crap, or be aspiring to own such crap. (ipod, mp3 etc)

Though the internet is great for education, so I imagine that there will be more younger audiophiles as time goes on.

I'm still into DIY and getting just fantastic value, although I have conceded that I dont have enough time to design as well as people who do it for a living. :)

Yes headphones count Atol!  Just a different perspective...  Listen, read, ask questions and listen some more... good things happen.

I got into audio gear when I was 12 yrs old because of my father. At 14 I sold my bed and slept on the floor for about a year to buy speaker cable. Not my brightest move but at 14 I could have done worse.

At 16 saved my cash and purchased a B&K st202 plus amp, preamp and adcom GCD 575 cd player. By 18 I had Genesis speakers and a Velodyne ULD 15 series II sub.

After that you move out on your own and realize that you can't keep pissing away money like you used to when you lived with your parents so I kept that gear for awhile. Now at 31 I am more into audio then ever, so much so that I get in trouble all the time around the house for talking about it. I am sure that happens to just about everyone here

I think the days of young audiophiles are about over with the introduction of home theater, ipods, etc. It is really a shame because some people that love music will never really think past an MP3, Blose and other mass produced crap.

I am 26, single, and loving life.  I got into this game due to live recording of concerts.  Having gotten well over my head in the concert recording world, and I am talking $5Kmics, 17 foot stands, pre's, a/d's, solid state 24/192 recording, I decided it was time to upgrade the playback system when I was 22.  I started with a pair of swan 4.1's that a fellow taper had, and the rest is history.  Not unlike recording gear, this hobby is addictive once you really get into it.  I also have a VERY nice job for someone my age, so I can afford to splurge on things at the moment while I am sans signifigant other (one year self-imposed hiatus from relationships ends soon though :nono: )

Now I have vmps BCSE 626r's, modded panny xr-45, and nitro wire from Bolder all around as well as a vmps larger and numerous other pieces opf gear.  The sky's the limit as far as I am concerned at the moment.

I'm 17 and I own a pair of the Hornshoppe horns, a darling tube amp, and a monica 2 NON-OS DAC.  Also Sennheiser HD600s and a SDS labs amp I built for them...

All purchased with my earned money and I have 5 times the cost of the system in savings :)
