Soliloquy 5.3i paired with Odyssey mono blocks
« on: 27 Jul 2005, 07:25 pm »
I'm considering a pair of Soliloquy 5.3i to run with my standard Odyssey mono blocks and Tempest. I am currently using the Nightingales, but the upgrade bug is starting to scratch. Does anyone know if the 5.3i s work well with Odyssey gear? Are the 5.3i s much of an improvement over the Nightingales?

If you're interested in their specs:

It's not so much that I'm looking for other speakers. It's that I may have a line on these particular speakers for a very reasonable price. Demoing them with my gear won't be possible. I can probably sell the Nightingales, then add a few dollars to get the Soliloquys. Yes I know everything is subjective, so I'm just looking to see if there is anybody out there who has experience with these two brands mated together.

I have the  Soliloquy 5.3's paired up with a Odyssey dual mono.  I can't comment on the improvement over the Nightingales, but the 5.3's are worth the money if you can find a deal on Agon.  The only fault I find with the Soliloquy's is that they don't reproduce the lowest  frequencies and need a quality subwoofer for that extra punch in the lower regions.

Boogaloo,

Thanks for the input. Are yours the 5.3 or the 5.3i's? I read a review that stated they are diffult to place due to being rear ported and they are heavy too. I can't imagine them being any more difficult to position than other rear ported speaks. Did you always have these paired together or did you have other speakers connected to the dual mono, or another amp connected to the 5.3's. If so, can you explain the changes you heard and what equipment you used to have?

Thanks!
LJ

My speakers are the original 5.3's.  Initially they were connected to a Sony 333 ES receiver, next an Odyssey Stratos stereo amp and currently the dual mono.  The progression in sound quality with each equipment upgrade to my ears was like a veil had been lifted from the music with a discernible ability to hear background instruments and all the vocals with a crystal clear purity.  Speaker placement hasn't presented any problems for me and I am quite satisfied with these speakers that I have owned for approximately four years, although currently I'm trying to save up enough cash for a Lorelei upgrade.
