Endler and EVS Attenuators
« on: 27 Jul 2005, 01:17 pm »
Hi folks,

Has anybody had experience with using/listening to both Endler and EVS Attenuators? Would appreciate any feedback on how they compare and if you have a preference, the reason for it.

Thanks

Only person I know who has used both is Mad DOg.  JonL might also have heard both since he had the EVS and visited MD for a session.

I know MD seemed quite pleased with the Endler's, but I don't recall him saying one seemed "better" than the other.

Maybe he isn't traveleing and will see your thread.

Endler Passive Attenuators

I just recently ordered the Endler Passive Attenuators for $160pr.I have a Lector CDP-7T going to a Musical Fidelity X-10V3 tube buffer with X-PSU going to a pair of Exposure 2010 power amps.Speakers are VSA-4jrs.I've noticed no loss in dynamics and presentation is real clean compared to when I used my Exposure 2010 integrated as a pre.Do to cable length limitation I have'nt been able to try them without the buffer between my cd player and amps-but would recomend them highly

I have a friend who owns Klipschorn speakers and uses Quicksilver amps. He recently tried both the Endler and EVS Attenuators. He kept the EVS. He said it wasn't even close.

Thanks for your input guys.  I realise that transformer attenuator passive preamps are pricier but I was also wondering if quality of sound that goes through this solution would be significantly better than the simple volume control solution of the Endler and EVS.  Appreciate any thoughts on this too.

That's interesting.  Mad Dog and I actually never had the chance to compare the latest EVS Ultimate "nude" attenuators with Endler head-to-head b/c I had to take my EVS back from Mad Dog before he got the Endlers in.  Mad Dog only has the older EVS, which is not as good as new version (we did compare these 2).

The EVS meets all MY needs, and I have hard time telling whether it's in the signal path or not, which is good enough for me.

There are advantages to transformer-based volume control, especially if the system is not optimized for passive use, i.e. impedance mismatch, long interconnects, etc.

But having owned both, I prefer EVS to transformer, IF the system is optimized for passives:  high-efficiency speakers, short interconnects (or no interconnects in case of EVS), low output impedance from source with large voltage output, high imput impedance of amps.

Jon...thanks for your input.  I do a lot of listening at lower volumes late at night, hence do you think the EVS in such a low volume listening situation lose any of its positive attributes?. I had seen a lot of opinions that TVCs keep the details and dynamics at low volume listening while resistor based attenuators don't do so well.

i've heard them both in my system but not in an a/b and feel they are both excellent.

i did have a chance to a/b my older EVS Ultimates & the Endlers and the Endlers were significantly more transparent...when Jon L and I a/b'd the EVS nudes and the older Ultimates, we found the same to be true so this would lead me to believe that the Endlers & EVS Nudes are pretty similar in performance. the EVS Nudes do have better build quality tho.

i heard the same from A-gon member Boa2 whose opinions i trust, but i was surprised because the performance gap btwn the old EVS & Nude EVS was about the same as that btwn the old EVS & Endlers in my system...

EVS attenuators bye bye

I am no longer making the EVS Ultimate Attenuators.  I might make them in conjunction with a highly modified Nuforce amp sale, but surely not by themselves.  So, if you want an UA you will have to find one used.  I will have a 12 position attenuator as an option on the input of the Nuforce amps (mounted inside the amp).

Mad Dog & Ric,... thanks for sharing your thoughts and information on this.  I have a pair of Nuforce Ref8 and I am trying to take advantage of the amps transparency with passive attenuation approach.

i'm using the Endler attenuators w/ the Nuforce Ref 8s in a secondary system and it gives my primary system a very good run for the money!  8)
